Honda announced that it will finally unveil the production model of the new "NSX" at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.
Three years have passed since the concept was unveiled in Detroit in 2012, and the production car is finally set to appear. Judging from the released images, the overall exterior appears to be largely unchanged from the concept model. As it will be sold in North America under Honda's premium brand "Acura," the logo is shaped like an "A."
The concept model was equipped with a sports hybrid power unit combining a motor integrated with the transmission, plus one motor each for the left and right front wheels, for a total of three motors, and a V6 VTEC twin-turbo engine. While details have not yet been officially released, this hybrid configuration will be carried over to the production model. The teaser video released allows a glimpse of the sporty sound produced by the motors and engine.
Regarding the unveiling, Ted Klaus, Chief Engineer and Global Product Leader for the new NSX development, stated, "After three years of intensive development, we are thrilled to finally present the new generation supercar, the Acura NSX, to everyone. We have inherited the heritage of the NSX and developed the new NSX as a supercar that responds to the driver's intentions, with the driver at its core."
To produce the new NSX, Honda has invested approximately US$70 million (about 6.65 billion yen) to establish a "Performance Manufacturing Center" adjacent to the Ohio Center at Honda R&D Americas in Ohio. Preparations are currently underway for the start of mass production in 2015.
