Adopts a luxurious styling

The 2016 Explorer, first revealed at the LA Show 2014, is the first major update for the current model, which has been on the market for about four years. With significant design revisions, particularly to the front section including the grille, headlights, and bumper, it presents a sporty yet luxurious appearance. The changes are so substantial that at first glance, it could be mistaken for a full model change.

The front face, previously rounded and somewhat futuristic, has been completely redesigned with a horizontal emphasis, creating a more defined and assertive look. The sporty design is now more edgy. The front grille, connecting the left and right LED headlights, features a mesh design on the top-tier 'Platinum' model, while other models have a new design with three bars and three-dimensional blocks between them. The headlights incorporate distinctive C-shaped daytime running lights.

The bumper and the protective cladding that encircles the lower body have also been redesigned for a more robust SUV presence. The fender arches use the same material as the cladding, and the color has been changed from the traditional black to a more grayish hue.

While the basic interior structure remains the same as the previous model, the materials used have been upgraded for enhanced quality, and minor design adjustments have been made to create a more refined ambiance. The new top-grade 'Platinum' model features quilted leather seats for a luxurious feel, and combined with a dashboard incorporating wood and matte aluminum accents, it offers a sophisticated and premium cabin. On this 'Platinum' model, real wood and aluminum are used for the trim and dashboard materials, and even the Ford oval emblem on the steering wheel is made of aluminum for the first time.

Adopts EcoBoost engines

Beyond these interior and exterior refinements, the most noteworthy addition is the new 2.3-liter and 3.5-liter EcoBoost engines. While Ford already offers a 2-liter inline-4 direct-injection EcoBoost engine in the Japanese market, the newly introduced units are a 2.3-liter inline-4 direct-injection turbo with a maximum output of 201kW (273ps) and 407Nm (41.5kgm) of torque, and a 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo with a maximum output of 272kW (370ps) and 475Nm (48.4kgm) of torque.

Both engines are paired with a 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. The manual mode thumb switch, previously located on the shift knob, has been replaced with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, allowing for more accessible sporty driving.

All engines, except for the traditional V8, are new-generation EcoBoost units. While the combination with the drivetrain has not yet been announced, there's anticipation for the Explorer to offer the popular inline-4 engine and 4WD combination found in the Lincoln MKC, which would be a first for the Explorer. The current model's 2-liter inline-4 EcoBoost is only available with front-wheel drive. Given the significant demand for 4WD, a new lineup featuring it would be a major point of interest for fans.

Furthermore, the Intelligent 4WD system, essential for an SUV's off-road capability, has been upgraded with a new unit boasting approximately 20 times the processing speed of the previous version. The chassis rigidity has been enhanced through measures such as larger subframes, tower braces, and stabilizer bars, resulting in a significant improvement in overall driving performance.

A more luxurious model also introduced

Another feature that exemplifies Ford's long-standing expertise in SUV manufacturing is the washer system for the front and rear view cameras. This practical addition ensures a clear view even when driving on muddy, sandy, or snowy terrain, making it easy to clean off dirt.

The incorporation of such user-centric, practical features demonstrates a deep understanding of users who rely on their SUVs as tools, a hallmark of a manufacturer that truly knows its customers.

The 'Platinum' grade, added to meet market demand for more luxurious large SUVs, a trend led by European brands, features semi-automated park assist, a dual-panel moonroof, polished 20-inch wheels, and platinum silver kick plates that coordinate with the wheels. These modern amenities are designed to compete directly with European luxury SUVs in the crucial North American market.

Currently, only the revised design and some of the engine lineup for the 2016 Explorer have been revealed. It's possible that further enhancements, including increased engine power, will be made before its expected release at the end of 2015, a year from now. This is suggested by the footnote in the announced engine specifications stating, 'maximum output of at least 201kW (273ps).' A Japanese release is anticipated around the same time as the North American launch, with no significant delay.
