Mazda Enters the Bustling Compact Crossover SUV Market

Mazda held the world premiere of its all-new compact crossover SUV, the "CX-3," at the Los Angeles Auto Show currently underway. The CX-3 is the fifth model to fully adopt Mazda's proprietary new-generation vehicle technology, "SKYACTIV Technology," and its new-generation design theme, "Kodo – Soul of Motion."

With dimensions of 4,275mm in length, 1,765mm in width, and 1,550mm in height, it is a size smaller than its larger sibling, the "CX-5," which measures 4,540mm in length, 1,840mm in width, and 1,705mm in height.

The exterior design is powerful and sporty, with a distinctive front grille expressing energy flowing outwards through seven sharp fins. The headlamps feature a slim, sharp design, looking intently forward, with the turn signals positioned outside the main unit.

The side view, with the apex of the front fender set back to the base of the A-pillar, creates an impression of a larger vehicle than its dimensions suggest. The long, flowing hood line and the black-painted D-pillar further enhance the energetic impression of the CX-3's short-overhang design.

Adopts World's First Predictive Front-Wheel Slip Detection System

The interior space, refined and high-quality, echoes the exterior design. Based on the "Heads-up Cockpit" concept, operational and visibility-related items are arranged around the driver. The front seats offer ample shoulder room, distance between occupants, and legroom, ensuring a comfortable cabin for occupants of all body types.

The rear seats are positioned inward relative to the front seats, with a higher hip point, making it easier to see ahead and facilitating conversation between occupants diagonally across from each other.

Meanwhile, the powertrain lineup includes the "SKYACTIV-D 1.5" clean diesel engine and the "SKYACTIV-G 2.0" gasoline engine, tailored to market needs. Both a 6-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual transmission will be available.

The drive system features the new-generation AWD system with an active torque split control coupling, introduced with the CX-5, realizing excellent off-road capability and vehicle stability. It also incorporates the world's first predictive front-wheel slip detection system, along with a compact, lightweight power take-off and rear differential unit newly developed for the "Mazda2 (Japanese name: Demio)."

The model is slated for a phased global rollout starting in Japan from Spring 2015.
