The special model name "GTS" returns for the new Cayenne

Porsche Japan will add the "GTS" to its SUV model "Cayenne," featuring a 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 440ps, with reservations opening on Saturday, November 8th. The Cayenne, given the special "GTS" designation, was also offered in the previous generation (Type 957). However, while the previous model used a 4.8-liter V8 unit, the current model is equipped with a downsized V6 engine. Despite a significant reduction in displacement, the output has been increased by 20ps.

The lineup of the new Cayenne is complete

The "Cayenne GTS," for which reservations have also begun in Japan, is a new model that will have its world premiere at the LA Motor Show, opening on November 21st, alongside the base grade "Cayenne." The Cayenne GTS will be the high-performance model positioned below the flagship "Cayenne Turbo" (equipped with a 4.8-liter V8 twin-turbo engine), boasting the top performance among V6-engined variants. Meanwhile, the "Cayenne" remains the base model, equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 naturally aspirated engine, as before.

Both models were announced earlier this JulyCayenne S, Cayenne S E-Hybrid, and Cayenne Turboas models following these. This completes the model lineup for the new Cayenne, which has undergone a minor change.

The "GTS" being added to the minor-changed Cayenne traces its naming roots back to the "904 Carrera GTS," which debuted in 1963. The 904 GTS was a mid-engined racing car developed primarily to win endurance races, with 120 units produced for homologation. Since its debut in 1964, it has tasted victory in prestigious endurance races worldwide, including the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, for the staff in Weissach.

This traditional GTS naming was revived in 2007 with the second-generation Cayenne (Type 957). Porsche resurrected the three letters "GTS" for the first time in nearly half a century. Subsequently, the "GTS" designation has been used for sporty and special models such asPanameraandBoxster, and Cayman, and of course, the911, captivating the hearts of fans.

440ps from a 3.6-liter V6 twin-turbo

The Cayenne GTS is equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 twin-turbo engine, replacing the previous 4.8-liter V8 engine. While based on the power unit found in the Cayenne S, it has been tuned to produce a maximum output of 324kW (440ps) and a maximum torque of 600Nm (61.2kgm). Compared to the previous model, which featured a naturally aspirated V8 engine, previous modelthe maximum output has increased by 20ps and the maximum torque by 85Nm. On the other hand, fuel consumption is reported to be reduced by 0.9 liters per 100km.

The standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system has been given a sportier setting, and the ride height is 24mm lower compared to the Cayenne S. With the optional air suspension, the ride height is 20mm lower than the Cayenne S. The brakes are derived from the top model, the Cayenne Turbo, featuring 390mm front and 358mm rear discs, paired with red brake calipers.

The performance figures adhere to Porsche's established hierarchy, falling between the Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo. While the Cayenne S accelerates from 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds, the Cayenne GTS achieves this in 5.2 seconds, or 5.1 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package.

These times represent an improvement of 0.5 and 0.6 seconds, respectively, compared to the previous model, but do not surpass the Cayenne Turbo's performance of 4.5 seconds. The top speed reaches 262km/h, a respectable figure for an SUV exceeding two tons. For reference, the Cayenne Turbo has a top speed of 279km/h.

Exterior and interior also feature special touches

The Cayenne GTS also stands out in its exterior design. It features large air intakes, identical to those on the Cayenne Turbo. With the optional Sport Design package, it includes body-colored sporty side sills, wheel arch extensions, a roof spoiler, and a rear lower panel.

Furthermore, the emblems indicating the model name, the finely spoked 20-inch "RS Spyder" design wheels, exhaust tailpipes, and the bezels of the bi-xenon headlights are finished in black, while the LED taillights have smoked lenses.

Inside, the standard equipment includes 8-way electric GTS sport seats upholstered in leather/Alcantara, with "GTS" logos on the headrests. Alcantara is also used extensively throughout the interior.

With the optional "GTS Interior Package," the headrest logos, seat stitching, and seatbelts are finished in contrasting colors, allowing for a more personalized interior experience.

The basic Cayenne also arrives

The base model of the minor-changed version, the "Cayenne," features refined front and rear styling and is equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 naturally aspirated engine producing a maximum output of 300ps, similar to the previous model. The top speed remains 230km/h, the same as the previous model, but the 0-100km/h acceleration time has improved by 0.2 seconds to 7.7 seconds (7.6 seconds with the Sport Chrono package).

Similar to the other models that have undergone minor changes, the new Cayenne incorporates the latest technologies such as coasting mode, engine auto start/stop Plus, and a thermal management system for automatic engine warm-up, leading to overall efficiency improvements. Fuel consumption has been reduced by 0.7 liters per 100km compared to the previous model, now at 10.8km/ℓ, with CO2 emissions also reduced by 21g/km to 215g/km.
