A Sharper Design

Volkswagen's sporty compact coupe, the Scirocco. The current model is the third generation, which was revived in 2009 after a 17-year hiatus, following the first generation introduced at the 1974 Geneva Motor Show and the second generation released in 1981. This current model has finally undergone a minor change.

The major changes accompanying this model change are the front and rear designs.

The grille above the bumper, which was previously horizontal slats, has been changed to a honeycomb mesh that continues from the lower part, and the fog light surrounds have also changed from solid black to a design with fins in the body color, emphasizing horizontal width, a design inherited from the "Golf GTI"Golf GTI." The design around the headlights has also been updated, and with the optional xenon headlights, a strip of LED daytime running lights will be installed at the bottom of the lights.

The rear has also been redesigned so that the fender's bulge continues as a sharp-edged line on the hatch door. The rear lights, which incorporate C-shaped LEDs, also have a sharp design, and the overall design, which previously emphasized roundness, has been transformed into one composed of lines and planes.

Inside, sports seats and a leather sports steering wheel are now standard, and a Dynaudio Excite Sound System designed exclusively for the Scirocco and Park Assist are now available. In homage to past Sciroccos, a triple meter displaying turbo pressure, chronometer, and engine oil temperature has been installed in the center of the dashboard.

All engines have also been updated. The gasoline engines include one 1.4-liter and three 2.0-liter models, and two diesel models are available. All are inline 4-cylinder direct-injection turbo engines, with improved power and fuel efficiency.

The most fuel-efficient entry model, the 1.4-liter TSI engine, delivers a maximum output of 92 kW (125 PS), a 3 PS increase over the 2013 model, with a fuel consumption of 5.4 L/100 km (approximately 18.5 km/L). Replacing the previously available 1.4-liter TSI 118 kW (160 PS) version is a 2.0 TSI engine with a maximum output of 132 kW (180 PS). Despite the increase in displacement and output, fuel consumption has improved by 0.6 L/100 km, achieving 6.0 L/100 km (approximately 16.7 km/L).

The new 2.0 TSI engine, inherited from the "Golf GTI," delivers a maximum output of 162 kW (220 PS). Its fuel efficiency is 19 percent better, achieving 6.0 L/100 km (approximately 16.7 km/L). The top-grade "Scirocco R" is equipped with a 2.0 TSI engine boasting a maximum output of 206 kW (280 PS). Despite a 15 PS increase in output, its fuel consumption is 8.0 L/100 km (approximately 12.5 km/L).

Two types of 2.0 TDI diesel engines are available. The 110 kW (150 PS) version achieves a 10 PS increase while delivering excellent fuel economy of 4.1 L/100 km (approximately 24.4 km/L). The higher-output 135 kW (184 PS) engine also achieves a fuel consumption of 4.3 L/100 km (approximately 23.3 km/L) despite a 7 PS increase in output.

This new Scirocco is produced at a factory near Lisbon, Portugal, and deliveries will begin in Europe in August 2014. It will then be sequentially released in countries around the world.
