At the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011, Nissan will unveil the "Townpod," a new concept car that transcends the boundaries between passenger and commercial vehicles.

The Concept: Coupe Meets Van

Nissan's Townpod is said to have been developed with a target audience of free-spirited entrepreneurs. The Townpod, which fuses the comfort of a passenger car with the practicality of a commercial vehicle, is the result of considering what mobility would be optimal for efficiently managing a life that blends business and private activities in the city.

The exterior design is described as a fusion of two elements, appearing as both a sports coupe and a commercial van. A charging port is located within a retracting cover at the front of the body, and the surrounding steel-blue painted areas reflect off the body, creating an effect as if the retracting cover itself is illuminated.

The side and rear feature double doors. The side doors open almost 90 degrees, significantly widening the opening. The rear double doors slide widely to the left and right, allowing for opening and closing even in confined spaces. The opened doors are designed to slide along the side of the body, ensuring they do not obstruct other traffic or pedestrians.

A Design-Conscious Yet Practical Interior

The interior is designed with all seats being stylish, and the rear seats catering to professional use. Operations for the cabin environment, such as climate control and media playback, are managed via two digital screens located in the center. The upper monitor displays information like speed, battery level, and navigation.

Chief Designer Masato Inoue stated, "Many people, when they get into a car, first register phone numbers, addresses, and other information into the navigation system. However, this action is unnecessary with the Townpod. Through the smartphone's schedule function, the Townpod determines when and where you need to go. Based on this, the navigation system not only searches and displays routes but also plans your day's schedule. If you are running late due to unexpected traffic congestion, the Townpod will notify you so you can take appropriate action. Furthermore, it will also suggest the most convenient times and locations for charging."

The rear seats feature an innovative mechanism. They can slide forward and be stored in the front seats, creating a more spacious interior. Additionally, a sunroof-like hatch is positioned directly above the cargo space, allowing for the transport of tall items depending on the situation.

Will Nissan's proposal for the new urban dweller resonate with people's hearts? We will have to see the actual vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show to decide.
