The True Star Arrives: "S 65 AMG"!

The S-Class, which underwent its first full model change in eight years and announced the high-performance model"S 63 AMG long" equipped with a 5.5-liter V8 twin-turbo.Many journalists praised its outstanding performance. However, at the Tokyo Motor Show held from November 20th, an even higher-end model, the "S65 AMG long," made its world premiere.


The "S 65 AMG long" announced this time is equipped with the only 6.0-liter V12 twin-turbo in the current S-Class lineup. Its performance is overwhelming, with a maximum output of 463 kW (630 hp) and a maximum torque of 1,000 Nm. The surface of the V12 engine, housed under the hood, features a carbon fiber engine cover, signifying its special status. This is also one of the exclusive items for this model.

The transmission to harness this engine's power is the new 7-speed automatic "AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC," replacing the 5-speed automatic from the previous model.


With more gears, this new automatic transmission not only provides a more direct driving experience but also allows for lower engine speeds during cruising, contributing to improved fuel efficiency. Of course, it also features a manual mode for sporty driving, with aluminum paddles on the steering column for manual gear changes.

The suspension has also seen a dramatic evolution. The new S-Class's standout new technology, MAGIC BODY CONTROL (MBC), is integrated into the AMG sports suspension.


MAGIC BODY CONTROL is a system that uses stereo cameras at the front of the vehicle to detect road surface irregularities and proactively control the suspension accordingly. This minimizes body impact, ensuring a comfortable ride.


The AMG sports suspension offers two selectable modes: "Comfort" for a focus on ride comfort, and "Sport" for a more engaging driving experience.

The aluminum wheels adorning its feet are exclusive 20-inch forged AMG wheels, reducing unsprung weight and enhancing the driving feel.

Exterior and Interior Announcing its Exclusivity

The powerful exterior styling differs from the AMG series' "S 63 AMG long." The radiator grille, shining at the center of the front fascia, is a dedicated piece finished in high-gloss chrome with six twin louvers. The front apron also features an edgy design, said to resemble the letter 'A' of AMG, giving the front a more aggressive look.


Additionally, various trim parts are finished in high-gloss chrome, and emblems such as "V12 BITURBO" and "S 65 AMG" emphasize this model's special status.

The interior is equally luxurious, befitting a high-end model. Nappa leather is used throughout, including the door trims and roof liner. The AMG sports seats feature beautiful diamond stitching and are equipped with various functions for a comfortable drive, such as electric adjustment, seat heating, and climate control.


A design and function-oriented IWC-designed analog clock is centrally located on the dashboard. The distinctive TFT LCD instrument cluster found in the new S-Class is also AMG-spec, with the speedometer reaching a full 360 km/h. The AMG-spec meters can also display information such as engine oil and transmission oil temperatures.

Deliveries from Mid-2014

While the "S 65 AMG long" boasts numerous exclusive features, the "Head-Up Display" and "Touchpad," introduced ahead of other models, are also noteworthy.



The Head-Up Display projects information, such as vehicle speed and navigation guidance, onto a compact color display that appears to float about two meters in front of the driver on the hood. This reduces the need to divert attention from the road, enhancing safety and comfort.

The touchpad, integrated with the palm rest, allows the driver to operate the radio, audio system, and navigation using only fingertip gestures.


Its sophistication is further highlighted by the integrated 3D sensor, which prevents accidental activation even when the driver's arm is simply resting on the palm rest.


These features are standard on the S65 AMG long and are scheduled to be progressively introduced to other Mercedes-Benz models.

The "S 65 AMG long," offering enhanced comfort and overwhelming performance, was released on the same day as its announcement, with deliveries expected to begin from mid-2014. It is available only in left-hand drive, with a price announced at 32 million yen.
