Timeless Luxury and Beauty
Traditionally, the top model for Mercedes-Benz must be a coupe. The design study embodying this is the "Concept S-Class Coupe". The model first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show confirms this enduring Mercedes tradition and vision.
Developed based on the new "S-Class" sedan, this concept car previews the upcoming "CL-Class," or perhaps the "E-Class Coupe" which may lead to its name being changed to "S-Class Coupe" without the "concept" prefix. It heralds the arrival of Mercedes' flagship coupe.
Currently, the name "S-Class Coupe" is likely to be adopted to clearly signify its family ties with the S-Class. While the revealed model wears show-specific "attire," its overall atmosphere can still be grasped. Certain details are expected to be carried over directly into the production version.
It boasts an imposing body measuring 5,050mm long, 1,958mm wide, and 1,409mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,945mm, making it 90mm shorter than the S-Class's 3,035mm. Compared to the S-Class, it is 59mm wider and a significant 84mm lower. This clearly conveys its coupe-like long, flowing form and its nose-wide, low profile.

Fusion of Classical Ambiance and Latest Technology
The distinctive line running along the body side and the raised sections on the hood, known as "power domes," are motifs also adopted in the "CLA Class". The floating front grille is also a design element previously seen on the CLA.
The slim taillights, high beltline, and emphasized wheel arches are also notable exterior features. These arches envelop 21-inch wheels, fitted with front 265/35R21 and rear 295/35R21 tires on the concept model.
The design is that of a luxurious coupe that everyone recalls; while it may not present overwhelming novelty, it offers an appearance befitting a status symbol. The glass area, designed as a pillarless hardtop like the currentCL-Classand E-Class Coupe, is smaller than that of the CL-Class but designed to provide a sense of openness.
Meanwhile, the interior follows the S-Class design but features a dashboard with a three-dimensional emphasis on the central horizontal section. Combined with white seats featuring vertical lines, it presents a classical ambiance while offering a new proposal.
This unique design is made possible by a newly shaped airbag system. The instrument cluster uses two 12.3-inch LCD screens placed side-by-side, as seen in the S-Class. It will be interesting to see how much of this interior design is replicated in the production model and how it will be differentiated from the S-Class.
The powertrain is a 4,663cc V8 twin-turbo engine, the same one found in the "S550 Long" introduced in Japan. It produces a maximum output of 335kW (455ps) and a peak torque of 700Nm (71.3kgm). The safety features, known as "Intelligent Drive," are also inherited from the S-Class.
Equipped with stereo cameras, it can acquire a 3D view of the area up to approximately 50 meters ahead. Combined with radar and ultrasonic sensors, the "6D Vision" system can detect objects and their movements around the vehicle, as well as monitor preceding vehicles up to 500 meters away. Although the body is a pillarless two-door coupe style, the hardware, including the powertrain and safety systems, is inherited from the current S-Class, the pinnacle of automotive technology.
The "Concept Style Coupe" announced at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show became the "CLA Class". Similarly, anticipation is high for the "S-Class Coupe" that will emerge after shedding the "Concept S-Class Coupe" costume. The production model is expected to be unveiled in 2014.
