BMW Unveils PHEV for Outdoor Use
BMW“Concept Active Tourer” appeared at the 2012 Paris Motor Showand is a plug-in hybrid car that will be mass-produced, featuring BMW's signature transverse engine. The "Concept Active Tourer Outdoor," which can be considered a variation of it, has now been unveiled.

PHEV Approach for Sports Activities
When thinking of outdoor sports activities, the accompanying vehicle is typically an SUV. BMW uses the term SAV for its SUVs, an acronym for Sports Activity Vehicle. However, BMW has now presented a different idea for outdoor sports activities.
This is the BMW "Concept Active Tourer Outdoor" unveiled this time.
As its name suggests, it is a derivative model of the BMW "Concept Active Tourer" which is slated for production. It is a plug-in hybrid car with a 1.5-liter inline 3-cylinder turbo engine, half the displacement of the company's 3-liter inline 6-cylinder turbo engine, mounted transversely at the front to drive the front wheels, while an electric motor drives the rear wheels.
The system's maximum output is 140 kW (190 hp). 0-100 km/h acceleration is under 8 seconds, with a top speed of approximately 200 km/h. It can travel about 30 km in EV mode, with CO2 emissions below 60 g/km and fuel economy of 2.5 L/100 km. These figures are the same as the "Concept Active Tourer."
The "Concept Active Tourer Outdoor" is characterized by a body shape that appears closer to a production model, and its ability to carry two bicycles on the rear, making it a model more consciously designed for outdoor sports activities.
The wedge-shaped body is finished in a sporty color called "Solar Race Orange." Its dimensions are 4,350 mm in length, 1,833 mm in width, and 1,576 mm in height, making it relatively compact. However, it offers ample interior space.

The general method involves using armatures on both sides of the luggage compartment to secure the bicycles, folding down the rear seats to create a flat floor, and then stowing the bicycles there.
The durable and easily cleaned floor features an access hatch to an underfloor storage space near the hatch gate, which can also serve as a seat.
Interpreting a multi-purpose PHEV not as a family car or city car, but as a vehicle for sports that makes effective use of limited space and emits no CO2 in nature, is perhaps a concept model that is very much in line with BMW's philosophy.
