360ps Maximum Output: The Most Powerful 4-Cylinder Engine
The "A 45 AMG," a core model in the growth strategy known as "AMG Performance 50," which continues until the 50th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG GmbH in 2017, has had its details finally revealed. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine produces a maximum output of 265kW (360ps) at 6,000rpm and a maximum torque of 450Nm across a wide range from 2,250-5,000rpm. Its output of 133kW (181ps) per liter rivals that of supercars, making it currently the world's most powerful four-cylinder engine for a production car.
At the same time, fuel consumption is reported at 6.9ℓ/100km, which translates to 14.5km/ℓ in Japanese notation, indicating excellent efficiency. The resulting CO2 emissions are 161-165g/km.
Acceleration from 0-100km/h is 4.6 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 250km/h.
Two exhaust systems appear to be available. The first, called the "AMG Sports Exhaust System," features an automatic flap and, like theSLK 55 AMGit produces a thrilling exhaust note from its twin tailpipes during acceleration, while ensuring Mercedes' characteristic quietness for long-distance journeys during cruising.
In contrast, the "AMG Performance Exhaust System" is said to generate an even more intense exhaust sound, befitting a four-cylinder engine, during acceleration and gear shifts.
The transmission is the 7-speed "AMG Speedshift DCT" sports transmission, featuring three shifting programs and a "RACE START" launch control function.
The drive system is "4MATIC," meaning all-wheel drive. However, according to Mercedes-Benz, this is also an "AMG 4MATIC" system optimized for performance, featuring a compact design that directs torque to the rear wheels from the transmission. While torque distribution can be freely adjusted, for efficiency, it primarily operates in front-wheel drive and switches to a maximum of 50:50 all-wheel drive when necessary. It also instantly engages a multi-plate clutch to send torque to the rear wheels upon detecting front-wheel slip.
The badge on the front fender, unique to AMG models, is lettered "TURBO AMG," and the front grille features twin-blade struts.
Additionally, a special "Edition 1" model will be available. This is a distinct model with a strong motorsports image, featuring a white body color, matte gray stripes on the hood, roof, and body sides, and a red and black interior.
The car will be publicly unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. Sales begin on April 8th, with deliveries in Germany starting in June.
