After Le Mans 24 Hours, Now GT3!
Bentley, which announced the "Continental GT3 Concept" at the Paris Salon, declared its intention to compete in GT3 racing with this machine by the end of 2013.
Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, Bentley's Chairman and CEO, commented at the announcement: "Our customers believe that Bentley has a close relationship with the circuit. Furthermore, the Continental GT3 realizes a dream we have held since the launch of the Continental GT. The new GT Speed is a more than suitable base model for a race car, and we have confirmed its excellent potential during the development process."
Bentley, renowned for its success at Le Mans from the 1920s to the 1930s, suspended its racing activities following its merger with Rolls-Royce in 1931. Their return to the circuit was in 2003, after coming under the Volkswagen Group umbrella, when they participated in the "Le Mans 24 Hours."Le Mans 24 HoursIn that year, with technical cooperation from Audi, Bentley created the "Bentley Speed 8" and achieved a 1-2 finish in their long-awaited return, signaling their resurgence in the world of motorsport.AudiIn that year, with technical cooperation from Audi, Bentley created the "Bentley Speed 8" and achieved a 1-2 finish in their long-awaited return, signaling their resurgence in the world of motorsport.
The GT3 race that Bentley will now challenge is a category for sports cars based on production models. The scope of modification is strictly limited by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), and the FIA also works to eliminate performance differences between machines. For this reason, even if a high-potential race car is developed, it will inevitably be subject to handicaps that negate its advantages, meaning the racing principle of "developing a superior race car guarantees victory" does not apply. Conversely, the Continental GT's large frontal area would normally create significant aerodynamic drag, a disadvantage for a race car. However, it is likely that some form of "relief measure" will be implemented to offset this disadvantage.
We eagerly anticipate Bentley's performance as they return to the circuit after a decade, since their victory at Le Mans in 2003.
