Civic as the core, expanding diesel models in Europe

Honda is making a strong push with the "CR-V," now equipped with a powertrain that can be called the European standard: a small-displacement diesel turbo. And there's another noteworthy piece of news: the development of the "Civic Type R," aiming to be the fastest FF car.

The Civic Type R is coming!

Placed in the most prominent spot on the stage was the Civic WTCC, scheduled to debut at the Suzuka round of the WTCC (World Touring Car Championship) in October. Its heart is a 1.6-liter direct-injection turbo developed as a race-specific engine.

The focus of attention is, naturally, this core Civic model. Announced here was a model equipped with a newly developed 1.6-liter diesel engine. Branded "EARTH DREAM TECHNOLOGY," this engine achieves low CO2 emissions of 94g/km.

Meanwhile, it was revealed that the "Civic Type R" is under development as a model to lead the sports image. The aim for this Type R is clear: to achieve the fastest time for an FF car at Germany's Nürburgring. The current record is held by Renault"Mégane RS" Trophy's 8 minutes 7.97 seconds. To surpass this would require a considerable upgrade from the previous generation, which was sold in Japan as the Type R Euro. The target launch is 2015.

Furthermore, regarding the Civic, the development of a wagon model was announced. A concept for this is expected to be shown in 2013.

Honda also unveiled the new "CR-V." The company plans to introduce a diesel engine version of this model in the future.

With the acquisition of a small-displacement diesel engine—an essential weapon for competing in Europe today—Honda exuded a sense of momentum not felt in some time. Such was the Paris Salon.
