“Mercedes Descends to Earth”
New A-ClassThe moment the new A-Class shed its veil, such a thought crossed my mind. Until now, the A-Class held a unique, unrivaled position in its category. To ensure safety, including collision protection, even within its compact body, it employed a distinctive basic structure known as the "sandwich structure."
However, the new A-Class did not opt for a second helping of the sandwich. It adopted a conventional body structure, similar to other cars in its class from competing manufacturers. Visually, its basic form is that of a standard hatchback. In essence, a celestial being has descended and will now compete on the same level as everyone else.
According to Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, the compact car market is expected to double in size due to the growth of motorization in emerging economies. While this is a prediction, it's possible that even Mercedes cannot sustain itself in this wild market with mere platitudes or idealism. The new A-Class's new direction, likely decided upon after considering productivity, cost, and various other factors, is one we should watch closely for its level of refinement.
