A Complete Transformation for the A-Class

Mercedes-Benz has finally unveiled the new A-Class. Abandoning the traditional "sandwich concept" and with AMG members involved from the early stages of development, the car's ride height has been lowered by 18cm compared to its predecessor, marking a significant shift towards a sporty design while achieving a drag coefficient of 0.26.

This new A-Class will be available in six variations: three gasoline and three diesel engines, divided into three lines: Urban, Style, and AMG Sport. The A250 model, equipped with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 155kW, recorded the lowest CO2 emissions in Mercedes-Benz's internal combustion engine history at 99g/km. Furthermore, in addition to existing technologies like direct injection, turbocharging, and the start-stop function, the 1.6-liter gasoline engine will debut a new "Camtronic" technology that restricts airflow during low-load conditions.

A for Attack

Strategically, the new A-Class, along with the B-Class which shares the same architecture, will spearhead the "Mercedes-Benz 2020" future business plan. According to Daimler CEO Dr. Zetsche, "The 'A' in A-Class stands for Attack." With its design, environmental performance, and dimensions of 4,292mm (length) x 1,780mm (width) x 1,433mm (height), it directly challenges the premium compact market occupied by vehicles like theAudi A3" andBMW 1 Series", marking Mercedes-Benz's bold entry into this segment.

Seamless Smartphone Integration

The concept of integrating the infotainment system with smartphones is also being highlighted, though it will be an optional feature. Initially, it will support iPhones, with plans to extend compatibility to other operating systems.

Beyond this, the vehicle incorporates Mercedes-Benz's signature safety technologies, such as the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST and Brake Assist. The optional PRE-SAFE® system, which tightens seatbelts and closes windows when an accident is unavoidable, is also available. In contrast, the interior design offers a more subdued aesthetic compared to the previous A-Class.

As mentioned, the exterior boasts a sporty appearance. The A250 Sport and A220 CDI Sport models feature a distinctive "Diamond Grille," lightweight 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, 235/40 R18 tires, red brake calipers, and a dedicated front axle with specially tuned suspension, all contributing to an AMG-enhanced visual and equipment package that closely resembles the concept model.

It comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, with an optional 7-speed dual-clutch transmission available. Sales in Germany are set to begin this July.
