Super Lightweight
The new SL-Class, featuring an all-aluminum body shell for further weight reduction, was unveiled. According to Mercedes-Benz, this new model is 110kg lighter than if steel were used, and compared to the previous generation, the SL500 is 125kg lighter and the SL350 is 140kg lighter. This translates to more dynamic performance and improved fuel economy, while also offering superior rigidity compared to the steel-bodied previous generation. The exterior retains the SL-Class image but features a striking single-bar grille and large headlights. The lightweight hardtop can be opened or closed in just 20 seconds.
A More Spacious and Luxurious Interior
The body, measuring 4612mm in length and 1877mm in width, is larger than the previous generation by 50mm in length and 57mm in width, ensuring a more spacious interior. Leather seats and wood trim create a premium ambiance. The new "Front Bass" audio system, which places bass speakers in the free space ahead of the footwells, promises a "concert hall-like" acoustic experience even with the top down. Another subtle yet innovative feature is the "Magic Vision Control," which dispenses washer fluid directly from the wiper blades, preventing obstructed vision and avoiding splashing the driver or passengers when the roof is open.
Two Grades Announced
Two grades were unveiled this time. The SL350 is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing a maximum output of 306ps and a maximum torque of 370Nm, with fuel consumption of 6.8ℓ/100km, approximately 30 percent better than the previous model.
It achieves 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.9 seconds.
The SL500, on the other hand, features a 4.7-liter V8 engine with a maximum output of 435ps and a maximum torque of 700Nm, completing the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds. While increasing maximum torque by 32 percent compared to the predecessor, it achieved a 22 percent improvement in fuel efficiency.
In Germany, where pre-orders began on December 15, 2011, the planned sales prices are 94,534 euros (approximately 9.27 million yen) for the SL350 BlueEFFICIENCY and 117,096 euros (approximately 11.49 million yen) for the SL500 BlueEFFICIENCY.
