Cadillac's New Flagship is Named the CT6

Cadillac's flagship sedan, a rival to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series, has been unveiled at the New York Auto Show. The new name is the Cadillac CT6, and it effectively succeeds the XTS, the brand's previous top model. The CT6 is also the first of eight new models Cadillac plans to introduce by 2020, signifying a restructuring of Cadillac's naming conventions and lineup.

Eight New Models to Be Released by 2020, Starting with the CT6

Unveiled at the New York Show, the Cadillac CT6 is the brand's new flagship model. Previously, the XTS full-size sedan topped Cadillac's lineup, but the CT6 is its effective successor. Unusually, General Motors Japan, the importer, announced plans for its introduction to Japan concurrently with its New York Show debut.

While the XTS, which was the flagship model in the US, was not officially imported by General Motors Japan (it was sold through parallel import by Yanase, a GM authorized dealer), Cadillac positioned the CT6 as a global model for international markets. This explains the early announcement of its introduction to Japan. This move hints at Cadillac's aggressive and shrewd global strategy.

Cadillac has already committed $1.2 billion (approximately 143 billion yen) to restructuring its lineup and plans to introduce eight new models by 2020. The CT6 represents GM's first step in its ambitious plan to elevate Cadillac from a US luxury brand to a global luxury powerhouse, making it a crucial strategic model.

As part of this global strategy, Cadillac will begin revamping its model names and lineup with this model. While Cadillac has not revealed all details, it will compete with the Mercedes-BenzS Classand BMW7 Series's L-segment rivals. The current E-segment model, theCTS, is expected to be replaced by the "CT5," and the D-segment covering "ATS" is anticipated to be renamed "CT4" and undergo a model change. However, it should be noted that these post-change names are purely speculative, based on reports from industry insiders.

According to Cadillac officials, the "CT" followed by a number to denote vehicle class was adopted with the current CTS, the third generation, in mind, recognizing its global acclaim. Incidentally, the initially leaked name for the new model was "LTS," likely signifying a sporty sedan in the L-segment. The fact that the XTS's full model change or successor is not being heavily promoted in the US may also be an effort to emphasize the lineup's renewal.

Meanwhile, and perhaps unnecessarily, there are voices among press members at the New York Motor Show questioning the naming convention. Typically, when numbers are used in car names, they are chosen to position the vehicle above rivals, such as Audi'sA8in relation to the BMW 7 Series. The question remains whether a model positioned above the CT6 will emerge, or what will become of the iconic luxury SUV,Escalade, sparking continued interest.

S-Class Sized with E-Class Weight

The CT6, Cadillac's inaugural model in its full-scale global market offensive, features an interior and exterior design that further evolves the "Art & Science" design philosophy. Its basis is the "Elmiraj" concept coupe unveiled at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Its lineage can be seen in the raised front corners, the sculpted hood that integrates with the front grille, and the sharp, blade-like LED running lights at the front, mirrored by the angular taillights. These design cues are also common to the current CTS and ATS models, placing the CT6's design as an extension of them.

The dimensions are announced as 5,184mm in length, 1,879mm in width, 1,472mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,106mm. Compared to its intended rival, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (standard wheelbase, domestic figures), the CT6 is 68mm longer, 20mm narrower, and 24mm lower, indicating virtually identical exterior dimensions.

However, thanks to the use of aluminum body panels and lightweight construction techniques, its curb weight is claimed to be under 1,700kg, nearly 100kg lighter than its rivals. This weight is comparable to that of the MercedesE-Classand BMW5 Series, and6 Series.

The engine lineup includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo, a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6, and a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6. Despite these smaller displacement engines, Cadillac claims that the lightweight body will ensure ample performance.

Furthermore, Cadillac expresses absolute confidence in the CT6's body, stating that despite its light weight, it achieves a level of quietness and structural rigidity comparable to a bank vault, befitting a luxury vehicle.

The published power outputs are 269 hp for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo, 340 hp for the 3.6-liter V6, and 405 hp for the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 also produces a maximum torque of 55.3 kgm and features cylinder deactivation technology. The basic suspension setup consists of double wishbones at the front and a multi-link system at the rear.

All these power units are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. In addition to rear-wheel drive, models equipped with the V6 engines will offer an all-wheel-drive system with an active on-demand clutch, as well as an active chassis system featuring Magnetic Ride Control dampers that adjust suspension settings for each wheel based on road conditions. Drive modes include Tour, Snow/Ice, and Sport.

Interior Blends Classical Design with Latest Technology

While the exterior, with its distinct character, stands out from the sharper designs of other luxury brands, the interior might strike some as somewhat conventional. However, this is a deliberate choice aiming for a classical aesthetic, resulting in a luxurious finish. The V-shaped dashboard is equipped with a 10.2-inch capacitive touchscreen LCD monitor.

This monitor boasts an HD resolution of 1,280x720 and allows for intuitive operation of Cadillac's advanced user interface, "CUE (Cadillac User Experience)." The system features faster scrolling response than before and includes a touchpad on the front of the center console armrest for handwriting recognition of destinations and points of interest.

Using these two interfaces along with steering wheel controls, drivers can manage CUE's functions, including audio, phone, climate control, and navigation. The CT6 also incorporates modern luxury car connectivity features such as OnStar 4G LTE support, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and charging capabilities for mobile phones and smartphones.

To enhance comfort, the seats feature heating and cooling functions, along with five massage programs. Monitors for rear passengers are integrated into the back of the front seatbacks. The rear seats also offer electric recline functionality, and the armrest is equipped with controls for the rear monitors and HDMI/USB connectors.

Furthermore, the CT6 offers class-leading interior storage. In the four-cylinder model, the center console alone provides a generous 2.2 liters of space. The advanced BOSE Panaray audio system, making its debut in the CT6, features 34 strategically placed speakers throughout the cabin. Leveraging design and technology from home entertainment systems, it delivers exceptional dynamic range, transforming the cabin into an ideal theater.

Cadillac Begins to Change

A unique feature is the world's first "360-degree Surround Video Recording System." This system enables continuous recording for security purposes, not only while driving but also when stationary or parked. Additionally, an enhanced night vision system that detects heat from people and animals is displayed on the driver information center, showcasing the latest safety technologies Cadillac has to offer, all integrated into the CT6.

Cadillac is well aware of the sentiment that American luxury cars should have V8 engines. While the timing and performance details are undisclosed, the sporty "V-Series" is already previewed. As before, this model is expected to feature a high-output V8 engine, rivaling Mercedes' AMG and BMW's M series, and will reign as the flagship driver's car.

With the CT6 as its top model, Cadillac is also developing compact SUVs and C-segment cars that will rival the Mercedes-BenzA-ClassThis is the basis for releasing eight models by 2020. To achieve this, Cadillac has strengthened its human resources by recruiting development staff who honed their skills at rival European and Japanese premium brands, and has moved its headquarters to New York to better respond to ever-changing global demands.

Production of the CT6 for the US market is scheduled to begin in late 2015, with production for Europe, Japan, South Korea, Israel, and the Middle East commencing in 2016. To reach the pinnacle of the global automotive world, the new Cadillac has now fully engaged its accelerator.
