Test Drive of the Refined Mazda Roadster—Experience the Ultimate Ride with KPC | MAZDA
The Lightest Version, "990S," Where KPC's Effect is Most Pronounced
The "990S" is based on the "S," the lightest grade of the current ND generation. It features chassis and engine tuning optimized for lightness and reduced unsprung weight. Specifically, RAYS 16-inch forged aluminum wheels reduce weight by 800g per wheel, totaling 3.2kg for all four. The front brakes are upgraded with large-diameter Brembo ventilated discs and four-piston calipers. The engine response is enhanced, the electric power steering feel is moderated, the coil springs are stiffer, and the dampers are slightly softer in extension. Furthermore, the 990S is characterized by the absence of underfloor reinforcement and stabilizer bars, as well as an open differential.
Driving the 990S, I immediately felt KPC's effect most strongly. The combination of its lightness and finely tuned suspension provides a comfortable ride even on rough roads. Yet, with minimal inner wheel lift in corners, I could confidently apply throttle immediately after the apex. This was exhilarating. While it may not involve flashy upgrades like increased engine power or aerodynamic enhancements, the significant impact of these subtle changes was truly surprising.
The 990S features a dark blue soft top, with blue accents on the air conditioning louvre bezels and floor mats. The black brake calipers have blue "Brembo" lettering that becomes visible when driving, adding a stylish touch. Its attractive price of ¥2,893,000 makes it understandable why it is currently the best-selling Roadster model. While the largest demographic is those aged 50 and over, 28% of buyers are under 30, indicating strong interest from younger drivers.
