Test Drive of the Refined Mazda Roadster—Experience the Ultimate Ride with KPC | MAZDA
New Model "Roadster RF VS Terracotta Selection" and 6MT "RS"
The test drive began with the "VS Terracotta Selection," a new model of the "RF" which features a power-retractable hardtop and accounts for 30% of sales. This model features a sophisticated interior with Nappa leather in a vibrant "Terracotta" color. The combination with the exterior color of the test car, a pale beige Platinum Quartz Metallic, creates a very "adult" image.
The RF weighs 1,130 kg, slightly heavier than the soft-top model. While it is equipped with a more torque-rich 2.0-liter engine (184 ps/205 Nm) to match, the test car featured a 6-speed automatic transmission. Combined with its refined interior and exterior, it feels more suited for leisurely drives on a holiday than for spirited runs on mountain passes. Consequently, I didn't experience many moments where I could distinctly feel the effect of KPC, but the car remained stable throughout. With a price tag of ¥3,825,800, it is a model that offers substantial value.
Next, I drove the "RS" 6MT model in Mazda's signature Soul Red Metallic color. It features a 1.5-liter engine producing 132 ps/152 Nm and weighs just under a ton at 1,020 kg. This performance-oriented model is "armed" with dedicated Bilstein dampers, large-diameter brakes, a front suspension tower bar, a rear stabilizer, a torque-sensing LSD, and Recaro seats—and of course, it includes KPC.
Compared to the RF, the ride is noticeably firmer. The stiffened rear suspension firmly grips the road, transmitting a considerable amount of harshness. Although the effect of KPC was less apparent due to the LSD's operation, the absolute cornering speed was naturally higher. While this might appeal to those seeking such performance, it raises questions about whether it truly embodies the Roadster's spirit. The optimal balance, I found, was in the 990S.
