Test Drive the New Alpine A110—Exploring the Differences Between the "110 GT" and "110 S" | Alpine
The A110 GT and A110 S Have Entirely Different Characters
The two cars indeed have entirely different characters. It was raining in Hakone on the day of the test drive. While absolute speed is one thing, I was disappointed not to be able to fully experience its acceleration and cornering characteristics. Well, it couldn't be helped.
The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires are quite sporty, but they don't feel harsh or skittish. From the moment you turn the wheel, the car feels wonderfully responsive. It's impressive how well they are utilized, creating a cohesive driving experience.
While not about absolute performance, the difference between the GT and S was evident even in the unfavorable rainy conditions. The S is incredibly sharp, as if eager to exploit the full potential of the engine that smoothly revs to high RPMs. The moment you realize how far you could push the accelerator, you instinctively brake. Experiencing the smooth braking, which feels directly connected to your foot, confirms the saying that brakes are paramount in a sports car.
The engine's high-frequency sound, indicative of its high-revving nature, is audible inside the cabin, stimulating my senses. A moment of realization comes as I wonder what would happen if I kept the accelerator pedal down, prompting me to brake. Experiencing the smooth deceleration, which feels as if it's directly connected to my feet, reinforces the notion that brakes are indeed the most crucial element of a sports car.
The car reacts instantly to the slightest movement of my wrists, holding the steering wheel at the 9:15 position. The nose changes direction with remarkable speed. With almost no body roll, it feels like a go-kart.
Compared to the S, the GT is somewhat milder. Its combination of the 340Nm of torque, effectively utilized, and the softer suspension setup makes it fast yet comfortable. Of course, its cornering speed is also high, making it seem more suitable for everyday use.
The multimedia system has been updated, now supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Focal 4-speaker system provides audio (a modest number of speakers), with a subwoofer added exclusively to the A110 GT.
When looking for rivals, there are many competitors. These include the Porsche 718 Cayman T (mid-engine 220kW engine, 8.82 million yen), Audi TTS (2-liter 245kW engine with quattro system, 8.59 million yen), Toyota GR Supra (front-engine rear-wheel drive with 258kW engine, 7.313 million yen), and the new Nissan Z (front-engine rear-wheel drive with 298kW 3-liter engine, 5.2415 million yen).
The "A110" is 8.11 million yen, the "A110 GT" is 8.93 million yen, and the "A110 S" is 8.97 million yen. It's commendable that they haven't created a significant price hierarchy between the GT and S. Furthermore, as mentioned, their characters are quite distinct, allowing for selection based on preference.
Personally, as mentioned earlier, I felt the GT was sufficient. However, I would want the lightweight monocoque bucket seats found in the S. They offer excellent support, and I believe a lighter atmosphere suits the A110 better than a heavy one.
