Key Changes Include Engine Updates and Air Suspension Improvements
Mercedes-Benz boasts a world-class lineup of SUVs, meticulously crafted to complement its sedan range, from the A-Class to the S-Class.
Their engine offerings are extensive, even including SUV coupes. Furthermore, they possess a unique asset in the G-Class, setting them apart from BMW and Audi. This diverse range ensures they cater to every conceivable need within the SUV segment.
The GLS, which we focus on here, is a standout model within this lineup. Unlike compact SUVs, not many manufacturers produce three-row, full-size SUVs. However, there is a consistent demand for them, particularly in North America, China, and the Middle East. Indeed, they offer a comfortable mode of transport in countries with five-lane highways.
The GLS began its journey as the GL-Class in 2006. It underwent a full model change in 2012 and was renamed the GLS in 2015 (2016 in Japan). As you know, Mercedes' SUV nomenclature involves adding a class-defining letter after GL, such as GLA, GLB, GLC, and GLE. The GLS now enters its third generation with this latest full model change. It was launched in Japan on March 23rd, with deliveries scheduled to begin in June.
The primary updates for this model change include powertrain revisions, enhancements to the air suspension, and upgrades to the latest safety features and user interface.
However, as you can see, the exterior design remains largely unchanged, adhering to a classic, conservative approach. Yet, upon closer inspection, subtle refinements are evident. The absence of character lines along the body sides creates a smooth, unadorned surface. This design philosophy, "Sensual Purity," is a hallmark of recent Mercedes-Benz aesthetics, first introduced with models like the CLS, and is now reflected here.
Exceptional Driving Stability
Two engine options are available: a 3.0-liter inline-six clean diesel turbo and a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo paired with an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and a 48V mild-hybrid system. These are designated as the GLS 400 d 4MATIC and GLS 580 4MATIC Sport, respectively.
While a 3.0-liter diesel, the GLS 350 d, was previously offered, it featured a V6 engine. This new model utilizes a highly efficient inline-six configuration for its diesel. Similarly, the V8 engine has been scaled down from 4.7 liters in the previous generation to the current displacement, with efficiency being a key focus. The addition of electric assistance boosts the maximum output from 455 ps to 489 ps. Consequently, both engines represent advancements in power, fuel economy, and environmental performance.
Our driving impressions revealed a remarkable level of stability. Despite its considerable 5,220mm length, the large body exhibited no sluggishness, responding precisely to steering inputs with unwavering stability.
This characteristic was particularly evident during our highway driving, where lane changes were executed smoothly without any unsettling oscillation. Cornering at highway on- and off-ramps felt equally composed. Unlike the Range Rover's more assertive suppression of body roll, the GLS maintains a relatively flat cabin attitude at higher speeds. This refined handling can only be described as "Mercedes magic," a testament to the new AIRMATIC suspension and E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, which demonstrate intelligent and sophisticated control.
Another notable evolution is the dashboard interface. The expansive central display adopts the MBUX system, familiar from the "Hey, Mercedes" voice command feature, offering a user-friendly experience that significantly benefits the driver.
In summary, the new GLS, while outwardly similar, boasts substantial internal advancements. Its exceptional driving stability suggests a design optimized for high-speed performance. The integrated enhancements in handling, control, and overall safety underscore its status as a truly reassuring full-size SUV. This vehicle truly embodies Mercedes-Benz's commitment and ambition.
