Test drive the Aston Martin DBX707, the world's most powerful SUV—what is the drive like with over 700ps? | ASTON MARTIN
A duality in the best sense
Aston Martin prides itself on its front-to-rear weight distribution. "The DBX707 has a 52:48 split, front to rear. Competitor large SUVs (mostly from the Volkswagen Group) are closer to 60% front bias, making them nose-heavy. This alone should tell you that the DBX was developed with the driver in mind," an Aston Martin engineer explained during the press event.
I recalled those words while climbing the steep mountain roads. The engine's characteristics are akin to a sports car, with peak torque arriving at 6000rpm, but with 900Nm of torque available from low revs, it delivers ample power.
Entering a corner, I used the powerful carbon-ceramic brakes to shift a bit of weight forward, ensuring precise steering, then quickly downshifted using the paddle shifters. Maintaining engine revs between 3000 and 4000rpm through the corner provided an indescribable cornering feel.
As the exit of the corner came into view, I pressed the accelerator further, unleashing exhilarating acceleration. On descents, the car's two-ton weight causes it to slightly drift outwards on tighter corners, mitigating lateral G-forces to ensure passenger comfort.
When driving alone, you can experience remarkably engaging cornering. In essence, the DBX707 possesses a duality in the best sense. It's an SUV that offers the explosive power and cornering prowess of a sports car. The other side is that of a comfortable passenger car.
When the "GT" (standard) drive mode is selected, it absorbs road imperfections meticulously, ensuring a comfortable ride without jostling the occupants. You can drive for miles without fatigue. My drive on Sardinia exceeded 400km in a single day, and I primarily used GT mode.
Aston Martin, which is soon to launch the hybrid hypercar "Valhalla," is diligently developing environmentally friendly powertrains, much like other manufacturers. In this context, releasing the DBX707 with its colossal gasoline engine makes us car enthusiasts quite happy.
