Test Drive: Lamborghini Huracán STO – A Car That Pushes the Allure of the Internal Combustion Engine to the Limit | Lamborghini
A Car That Makes Everyone Smile When They Get Out
The cockpit is also functionally designed for circuit driving. Key controls are placed in easily accessible locations, while controls for features not essential for racing, such as infotainment, are positioned secondarily and are easy to distinguish.
The small-diameter steering wheel is wrapped in Alcantara, providing a comfortable grip. It's easy to select the driving modes—Sport, Norma (still fast), and even Rain (plenty fast)—via controls on the steering spoke.
After selecting first gear with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission using the long, vertically oriented paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, I moved my right foot from the brake to the accelerator. A light press was enough to launch the car forward with a surge of acceleration that elicited an "Wow!"
The braking power is as immense as a race car's, allowing you to accelerate right up to the corner before braking – another thrilling aspect of this car. Accelerating through the gears to sixth and seventh, I'd brake just before what felt like the limit and downshift with the paddles.
Deceleration is swift and effective, as if hitting an invisible wall. Although peak torque is achieved at 6500rpm, the engine delivers ample power across a wide rev range, making it incredibly smooth to maintain around 3000rpm while navigating corners.
The car handles corners with agility. Its stability, clinging to the road even in high-speed turns, and the smooth response of the chassis to quick steering inputs in tighter corners, all combine to bring an involuntary smile to your face. It's truly delightful.
"It's a car that makes everyone smile when they get out," said Davide Sfrecola, Head of Japan for Lamborghini, on the day of the test drive. He was absolutely right.
A professional racing driver who also participated in the test drive was asked for his impressions. He responded with a smile, "I don't think there are many sports cars that are this responsive and forgiving." It reaffirmed my appreciation for what makes sports cars so special.
Lamborghini is also advancing towards hybridization and, eventually, full electrification. Rumors suggest plans for a colossal model, perhaps a V12 plug-in hybrid. While that prospect is exciting in its own right, the Huracán STO, which pushes the allure of the internal combustion engine to its absolute limit, struck me as a museum piece symbolizing the golden age of automobiles.
