A dramatic evolution of the "Land Cruiser"—a test drive of the new Toyota Land Cruiser | TOYOTA

The GR Sport Offers a Firmer Feel Than the ZX

The next model tested was the "GR Sport," equipped with a gasoline engine. The 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo gasoline engine is a powerful unit, producing a maximum output of 415 ps at 5,200 rpm and a maximum torque of 650 Nm between 2,000 and 3,600 rpm. It also uses a 10-speed automatic transmission with lock-up.
The exterior features a sporty design with "TOYOTA" lettering in white on the front grille, and a black finish for the wheel arches and side mirrors. The tires are 18-inch, 2 inches smaller than the ZX's, to enhance off-road capability, and the wheels are painted matte black, inspired by rally cars. The interior is also differentiated with "GR" logo front seats and a dedicated steering wheel.
On-road, the ride feels firmer than the ZX. Thanks to the E-KDSS (Electric-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System), exclusive to the GR Sport, which adjusts stabilizer effect, engaging "Sport" mode virtually eliminates the "wobble." The quiet and responsive rotation of the gasoline engine, combined with the seamless link between accelerator input and vehicle response, suggests that long drives would be effortless.
Furthermore, the GR Sport is equipped with a mechanism that can lock not only the rear but also the front differentials, enhancing its off-road performance. While the diesel model is only available as a 5-seater, the gasoline models (excluding the GX) offer a 3-row, 7-seater configuration, which could be a deciding factor for potential buyers.
The on-road body roll, also felt in the ZX, is a characteristic inherent to ladder-frame vehicles. Compared to the previous generation, which retained a more truck-like ride, the degree of this roll has been dramatically improved. Conversely, it is also a reflection of its excellent off-road performance. The ground clearance angles, such as approach, ramp breakover, and departure angles, remain unchanged from the previous generation. One can only imagine the "Land Cruiser" experience when utilizing its numerous, yet-to-be-tested off-road functions in the wilderness.
The Land Cruiser, which has long been active on unpaved roads in regions like the Middle East, Africa, and Australia, is expected to be used in the same way even with the new model. Demand is already soaring; in Japan, it is said that ordering one now means a wait of several years for delivery. The price, starting from 5.1 million yen, is also quite reasonable compared to rivals. Leisurely browsing the catalog, placing an order, and then patiently waiting for delivery can also be part of the enjoyment.
