Test Drive: Ford's Compact SUV, the Ecosport
Introduced to Japan by Ford Japan in April 2014, the compact SUV "Ecosport" is a model belonging to the popular B-segment, characterized by its bold appearance. It is also an internationally-minded product, being the fourth in the global product series developed under Ford's global strategy, the "One Ford" concept.

Ample Power and Utility
A large grille and a tall form. At first glance, its size is hard to gauge, but this "Ecosport" is actually based on Ford's B-car platform, similar to the "Fiesta". While the Fiesta measures 3,955mm in length, 1,720mm in width, and 1,475mm in height, the Ecosport is 4,195mm long, 1,765mm wide, and 1,655mm tall. When placed side-by-side, the height difference is evident, as expected of an SUV, but it's clear that it has been finished quite compactly.
However, despite using the same platform, the powertrain differs from the Fiesta. This model is equipped with a 1.5-liter all-aluminum four-cylinder DOHC engine producing a maximum output of 82kW (111ps) and a maximum torque of 140Nm (14.3kgm). It's a naturally aspirated engine, not one of Ford's next-generation fuel-efficient EcoBoost (turbocharged) engines. Nevertheless, it features the latest Ti-VCT (Intake and Exhaust Variable Valve Timing) and is paired with Ford's "6-Speed PowerShift (DCT = Dual Clutch Transmission)" transmission, allowing for a brisk driving experience.
Incidentally, all of Ford's current global models combine the latest B-car or C-car platforms with the latest powertrains. However, the "Fiesta," "Ecosport," "Focus", and "Kuga" all have unique powertrain and chassis combinations, with none being the same.
While the specifications are determined according to each vehicle's class and character, the fact that there are no identical engine and transmission combinations is a unique point of pride, though it can be a bit confusing when choosing a car. For reference, the Fiesta uses a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder EcoBoost (turbo) with 74kW (100ps) paired with a 6-speed DCT. The Ecosport, as mentioned, has a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder (NA) with 82kW (111ps) and a 6-speed DCT. The Focus features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder (NA) with 125kW (170ps) and a 6-speed DCT, while the Kuga uses a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder EcoBoost (turbo) with 132kW (182ps) and a 6-speed AT.
"Ford has its own internal standards for adopting powertrains based on vehicle weight, model, and character. Therefore, even if they share the same platform, they don't necessarily use the same engine or transmission," according to a Ford Japan representative. In other words, the selection is not based on a simple corporate logic of 'we have this engine, so let's use it in this model too.' This commitment to performance, which also affects driving dynamics, is a priority requirement that takes precedence over cost savings through shared mechanisms.

A Natural and Smooth Engine Matched to its Character
The difference between the Ecosport and the Fiesta becomes apparent as soon as you start driving. While the Fiesta accelerates with torque that builds from low speeds, the Ecosport feels more like the engine revs smoothly, and the speed follows. It offers a smooth acceleration characteristic of a naturally aspirated engine, and even when downshifting, there are no abrupt surges in acceleration. It consistently provides power that meets the driver's expectations without exceeding them.
Once underway, the responsiveness of the 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine is impressive. Ford explains this is achieved by "realizing ideal valve timing from low to high RPMs independently for intake and exhaust sides."
While the Fiesta's 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, producing 74kW (100ps), offers powerful performance, the Ecosport's natural throttle response and acceleration are more than adequate for an SUV. The quick response of the dual-clutch transmission effectively compensates for any perceived lack in numerical output, delivering sufficient performance for the vehicle's 1,270kg weight.
Although the driver's eye point is high due to its SUV nature, there is no sense of disconnect while driving. Even through corners, the body and steering operate in unison, maintaining the integrated feel characteristic of other Ford vehicles. The high chassis rigidity and the body's immediate response to steering inputs are highlights of this car. Drivers transitioning from a typical compact car with a lower ride height should find it easy to adapt.

Sufficient Off-Road Capability Despite Being Front-Wheel Drive
During this test drive, we confirmed that the Ecosport offers sufficient off-road capability even with its front-wheel-drive configuration. The test course included a short off-road section with slippery surfaces and steep inclines, which the Ecosport navigated with ease. This is thanks to its 180mm ground clearance, comparable to that of a full-fledged SUV, along with its rigid body and well-articulating suspension that provide excellent grip.
The approach and departure angles, crucial for off-road performance, are 25 degrees and 35 degrees, respectively. Furthermore, the layout of the electrical components in the engine bay and the air intake have been designed to allow for driving through water up to 550mm deep. While it may not match a 4WD in extreme off-road conditions like rocky terrain or deep mud, it offers more than enough performance for leisure activities such as driving on snowy roads to ski resorts or accessing campsites.
It's common nowadays for SUVs to be front-wheel drive. This is often advantageous for everyday usability and fuel efficiency, especially for primarily urban use. In fact, over half of SUV buyers in North America reportedly choose two-wheel-drive models. If you desire true 4WD capability, especially from a leading SUV brand like Ford, there are certainly other options available.
Indeed, the Ecosport's fuel efficiency of 14.5 km/ℓ (catalog value) as an SUV is another attractive aspect of this B-segment model.

A Tough and Impactful SUV Style
With its compact car dimensions, SUV functionality, capable front-wheel-drive performance, ample ride height, and a spare tire mounted on the rear gate, the exterior design exudes a rugged, tool-like image. The large, trapezoidal front grille is a common icon across Ford's global models, instantly identifying it as a Ford.
The solid, sculpted-from-metal aesthetic, the stable form with tires slightly oversized for the body (205/60R16) placed at the four corners, and the rear-mounted spare tire all contribute to its distinctly SUV appearance. The entire body effectively expresses its versatility as an all-rounder capable of tackling any road.
The full-size spare tire on the back is a key visual element of this car, but it might be cumbersome during reversing. However, the Ecosport is equipped with a rear-obstacle sensing system, minimizing practical drawbacks. This reversing assist feature significantly reduces driver stress during daily use.

User-Friendly Interior
Pull the lever integrated into the rear combination lamp on the right side, and the rear gate opens to reveal a tall luggage space with a capacity of 333 liters when carrying five passengers. This space, surprisingly large for its compact body, is made possible by mounting the spare tire externally. Furthermore, by folding down the 60:40 split-folding rear seats, the capacity expands to a maximum of 1,238 liters. It seems capable of swallowing camping gear, bicycles, or even furniture and large appliances during shopping trips.
The Ecosport's interior features 20 storage compartments. While seemingly minor, these user-centric considerations that enhance everyday usability are greatly appreciated not only by active SUV owners with a wide range of activities but also by anyone who uses a car daily.
In addition to two cupholders in the center console, door pockets can hold plastic bottles, and the glove box has a cooling function, allowing you to enjoy chilled drinks anytime. Furthermore, a slide-out drawer under the seat can store CDs and other small items that tend to clutter the cabin. Upon actual use, one can appreciate that the Ecosport's interior, while understated, is thoughtfully designed to capture the user's needs in today's world, where we carry more personal items like wallets, sunglasses, smartphones, and music players.
Given the rugged, tough exterior design, one might assume it appeals primarily to male drivers. However, sales representatives report surprisingly positive reception from female customers.
It seems that many female customers who visit the dealership to see the "Fiesta" fall in love at first sight with the "Ecosport's" design. While it's perfectly natural to see a woman driving a Fiesta, the image of a woman driving an "Ecosport" is both stylish and fashionable.
While personal preference plays a role, the sight of a woman wearing a man's wristwatch on a slender wrist can be striking. It's not surprising that women might feel a sense of sympathy with the "Ecosport's" design, which possesses a strong presence despite its compact size. It's akin to the appealing contrast of a woman driving an SUV in the city – a truly cool combination, I muse to myself.
