The First RS SUV Model

Test Drive: Audi RS Q3

Among Audi's full lineup, the "RS" model is crowned upon particularly sporty cars engineered by quattro GmbH, which handles motorsports and more. Tosifumi Watanabe test drove the "RS Q3," the first SUV model to bear that name, which went on sale in Japan this March. This article explores its character as a compact SUV RS and the reasoning behind introducing an RS variant to the Q3.

The RS Model Expanded

Readers who are car enthusiasts may have heard the name "quattro GmbH" before. It is a subsidiary of Audi that engineers and supports the development and customization of specialty models for production vehicles, as well as all racing activities. Its position is similar to "M" at BMW or "AMG" at Mercedes-Benz—perhaps that gives you a general idea.

The product closest to us that showcases the formidable capabilities of quattro GmbH is likely the model bearing the "RS" designation. While the name itself has existed since the early 90s, I personally believe the "RS6" that appeared in '02 was what truly brought quattro GmbH to widespread recognition.

Based on the "A6" chassis, it featured a 450ps V8 twin-turbo co-developed with Cosworth, clad in aggressively flared overfenders to accommodate its wide, large-diameter tires. Its very presence was ferocious.

While it might appear as a regular A6 to the untrained eye, its power output easily surpassed that of the Porsche "911 Turbo" at the time. It's not hard to imagine that numerous sports cars around the world were outmatched by the RS6. Such a character, bordering on the macabre, suits the RS line well. This unique individuality, reflecting Audi's cool image, is something other brands lack.

quattro GmbH, while keeping an eye on the strategies of M and AMG, is cautiously expanding its RS model range. This "RS Q3" is their first SUV-based model and the second to feature a transversely mounted engine, following the "TT RS." It's an ideal vehicle to understand their new direction, in addition to broadening their market reach.

Heart from the TT RS, Refined Interior and Exterior

The RS Q3 is powered by a 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine. Originally developed for the US market, this engine was thoroughly enhanced by quattro GmbH into a sports unit. It is fundamentally the same as the one in the TT RS, with a slightly detuned maximum output of 310ps and peak torque of 420Nm, but tuned to deliver maximum torque at lower RPMs.

The drivetrain utilizes a "quattro" system with a hydraulic actuator controlling a multi-plate clutch to instantaneously and finely manage front-to-rear torque distribution electronically. Specifically tuned for this model, it provides ample feedback from the rear axle even on-road, contributing to the RS character.

With this power and drivetrain, it accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h, its performance surpassing many hot hatches.

The braking system that handles this power features monobloc opposed-piston calipers. A distinctive feature is the use of wave-type 18-inch ventilated discs on the front. Originating from the world of bicycles and motorcycles, they offer advantages in heat dissipation and dust resistance, fitting the RS Q3's character as an on-road oriented vehicle with SUV origins.

The interior, with its supportive sports seats featuring diamond stitching, and the standard BOSE premium audio system, leaves nothing to be desired in terms of equipment. Combined with the exterior's exclusive design and wheels, its premium feel is exceptional for a compact SUV.

At 7.18 million yen, the price tag is the most affordable among RS models, and considering its specifications, it is a reasonable price point compared to the base Q3.

A Proud Member of the RS Family

Even in the most subdued "Comfort" mode of the drive selector, the RS Q3 conveys a distinctly taut and firm ride compared to the standard model. The purity of its rolling feel is likely due to the high precision of its moving parts. Compared to the assisted steering of many current Audis, the controls are noticeably heavier, almost to the point of being difficult for some women to handle. In essence, its low-speed feel strongly emphasizes the solid, robust response of traditional German cars, befitting an RS model.

While the unique five-cylinder sound is further emphasized by the variable exhaust valves, the engine's power delivery is generally flat and not overly aggressive.

When driven normally, it can be described as diligent, reliably delivering the required power when needed. However, when the accelerator is pressed firmly, it accelerates with gusto without any perceptible turbo lag; its strength in such moments is truly worthy of the RS name.

What is even more impressive, however, is the chassis setup that provides unwavering stability while effectively counteracting understeer. Here, the inherent nature of the Haldex 4WD system, which instantly transmits high torque to the rear wheels, and the excellent performance of the integrated electronic control devices stand out.

Admittedly, the body's movement becomes more pronounced in low-speed corners with sharp turns where the suspension is pushed to its limits. However, the uncanny neutrality and stability in medium to high-speed corners are unlike any SUV based on a C-segment platform. When cornering while accelerating, it sometimes exhibits oversteer tendencies. The RS Q3 possesses a sportiness that suggests the drawbacks of a transverse drivetrain in "quattro" systems have been completely resolved.

As a model developed by quattro GmbH, the RS Q3 undoubtedly emphasizes overall balance. Those familiar with its past models, filled with engineering audacity, might find it too refined and lacking. However, in terms of the high level of quality that permeates both its static and dynamic aspects, it is a worthy descendant of the RS lineage.

The RS Q3 represents the entry point into quattro GmbH's increasing focus on "ultimate dynamic quality" for its RS models. Of course, the world of exclusive Audis that unfolds from this is astonishingly profound.
