Test drive of the Subaru WRX S4 prototype – A distinctive performance car that has become much more mature | SUBARU
Admiring its natural handling through tight corners
At the test drive event, Subaru's developers mentioned that they had painstakingly refined the chassis and suspension system to further enhance handling. For reference, when comparing it with the previous WRX S4 on the circuit, I was impressed by the new prototype's natural handling as soon as I entered the first tight corner after starting.
The new model comes in "GT-H" and "STI" trims. The engine and AWD system are common to both. The latter features dedicated electronic control dampers and a specially tuned "Sport+" mode. Although a full assessment is difficult given the limited test drive time, the STI trim certainly offers a sharper driving experience.
The styling strongly evokes a crisp, angular image, similar to the new Levorg, with sharp edges. Surprisingly, synthetic resin cladding extends from the front through the front wheel arches to the rear wheel arches.
When I asked Tetsuro Genda of Subaru, who oversaw the design, if this was related to the current SUV trend, he replied that these are sophisticated functional components.
"They are called aerodynamic textures, and the surface is treated with a pattern. This helps to suppress airflow separation. The purpose is to improve driving by suppressing pressure fluctuations caused by air around the sides of the body during driving."
Furthermore, different aerodynamic textures are applied to the underside of the body. This is also to suppress airflow separation, ensure smooth flow, and increase air velocity, explained Hiroshi Aoyama of Subaru's Vehicle Development Division. He added that the driving impression changes significantly with and without these aerodynamic textures.
"Previously, the WRX S4 was intentionally tuned for a highly sporty character, aimed at fans of sporty driving. However, its popularity has grown in North America, and customers there want to enjoy their daily commutes as well, so we've also emphasized comfort in the new model."
As Mr. Aoyama mentioned, the new prototype is remarkably quiet and has a flat ride. Even on the special course, it was evident how the four wheels effectively absorb road impacts. I was also impressed that one could enjoy music even when the engine speed exceeded 5000 rpm.
While there's much talk about EVs, the release of such excellent ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles is truly good news for car enthusiasts. Fuel economy is also respectable at 11 km/liter (WLTC). It's a well-executed sports sedan. Oh, and the latest EyeSight X is available on all models.
Prices are 4.004 million yen for the GT-H (4.389 million yen for the GT-H EX with EyeSight) and 4.389 million yen for the STI Sport R (4.774 million yen for the STI Sport R EX).
