Test Drive: The S60/V60 with the New Generation "Drive-E" Engine
The new generation "Drive-E" 2-liter inline four-cylinder direct-injection turbo unit, newly adopted by Volvo for the S60/V60 series, is a new generation unit that balances powerful driving with the environmental performance demanded today. This is an anticipated new engine, with plans to sequentially expand the lineup starting with these two 60 series models.

Improved Power, 23% Better Fuel Economy Overall
The 1,968cc displacement unit, known as "B420," newly installed in the "S60/V60" and "XC60" series,"Drive-E"is a completely new design unit with a maximum output of 180kW (245ps) and a maximum torque of 350Nm (35.7kgm).
Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, it achieves a 3kW (5ps)/30Nm (3.1kgm) increase in output compared to the previous model, while realizing a JC08 mode fuel economy of 13.6 km/liter, a 23% improvement. This is an anticipated new engine for Volvo, expected to be adopted in other lineups starting with the 60 series introduced here.
Volvo has given this new generation powertrain the name "Drive-E." The "E" might suggest some form of electrification, like a hybrid, but its true identity is a conventional gasoline engine. However, despite being a conventional gasoline engine, its internals are packed with the latest technology.
It employs gasoline direct injection, considered the most efficient method currently, featuring injectors with the highest pressure in its class. Furthermore, it pursues thorough efficiency improvements through reduced friction in moving parts, a variable control oil pump, an electric water pump, and a new, higher-performance turbocharger.
As reported in the news regarding its introduction to Japan, Volvo undertook extensive renovations at its Skövde plant, which has over 100 years of history, to manufacture this new generation unit. Reflecting its role as a next-generation engine, they invested approximately 2 billion SEK (about 32 billion yen) in this powertrain, including the establishment of a new dedicated production line utilizing the latest robots. In essence, this is a flagship engine developed and released with serious commitment as a core next-generation unit.

Newly Equipped with an 8-Speed Automatic Transmission
The S60 "T5 R-DESIGN," now equipped with a new 8-speed automatic transmission replacing the previous 6-speed, delivers crisp acceleration, offering a sporty drive right from the start. This acceleration feels like it has ample torque, far beyond what one would expect from a mere 2-liter displacement. As the speed increases, the gears shift instantaneously, with no unnatural loss of momentum.
Accelerating after passing through a highway toll booth, it reaches 100 km/h in no time, underscoring its maximum output of 180kW (245ps). The ability to smoothly transition into high-speed cruising immediately is also beneficial for improving real-world fuel efficiency. At 100 km/h in 8th gear, the engine speed is a mere 1,500 rpm. Indeed, this promises to deliver unprecedented fuel economy.
Furthermore, the low engine speed during high-speed cruising contributes to the cabin's excellent quietness. A quiet cabin directly enhances comfort, reducing fatigue during long journeys.
In terms of fuel efficiency and comfort, Volvos equipped with the "Drive-E" engine stand out from their D-segment rivals. Previously, on a long drive from Tokyo to Kobe in an "XC60 T5 R-DESIGN" with the "Drive-E" engine, separate from this test drive, I confirmed an average fuel economy of 14.3 km/liter without consciously driving for economy, while adhering to speed limits and using the air conditioning and audio system. This is comparable to compact cars.
On this journey exceeding 500km, I frequently used the all-speed adaptive cruise control (ACC). If the "ECO COAST" function, available in the fuel-saving "ECO+" mode, could be used during normal driving (this function automatically disengages the transmission and engine during deceleration on highways, a form of coasting), I believe fuel economy would have been even better. Unfortunately, the "ECO COAST" function does not operate when ACC is engaged.
Incidentally, the "ECO+" fuel-saving mode optimizes the transmission's shift points and engine response for fuel efficiency, and activates the engine start/stop system, in addition to the "ECO COAST" function.
It efficiently controls the powertrain to suppress fuel consumption.

Volvo's Signature Clean and Smart Interior
Despite its aggressive exterior, featuring "R-DESIGN" exclusive aero parts like large 18-inch wheels, slightly lowered sports suspension, a dedicated front grille, and large bumpers, the "T5 R-DESIGN" is intriguing because it delivers excellent fuel efficiency for the D-segment.
It's like the outwardly aggressive, rebellious-looking young person who turns out to be an excellent university student.—Whether this analogy is appropriate or not, there is a surprising contrast here.
The "T5 R-DESIGN" also boasts Volvo's signature clean and smart interior, known for its meticulous craftsmanship and high quality. Exclusive features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, combination seats of leather and perforated leather, aluminum trim, sport pedals, and scuff plates with the "R-DESIGN" logo. The seats, in particular, offer excellent support and were confirmed to be well-designed, reducing fatigue even on long drives.
The instrument cluster uses a liquid crystal display, common among premium brands today, and can be customized with three themes: "Elegance," "Eco," and "Performance." In "Performance" mode, the meters turn red, which can be quite enticing. In this mode, the speed is displayed digitally, and the tachometer is easy to read, making it recommended for regular use as well.
As a side note, regardless of the selected theme, only the meter display changes. The engine and gear programs do not link to a more aggressive setting,—so you can drive with peace of mind even when focusing on fuel efficiency.

This Conventional Wisdom Doesn't Apply to the 60 Series
I test drove both the S60 (sedan) and V60 (station wagon) "T5 R-DESIGN" models. Both offered responsive handling that fostered a sense of unity with the driver. Generally, station wagons, with their larger openings, tend to be less rigid and offer a softer ride, but this conventional wisdom does not apply to the 60 series.
Even the station wagon boasts high body rigidity, providing a solid yet comfortable ride like that of thick rubber between the body and the road, along with agile driving. There is no need to compromise on driving performance, making it one of the few vehicles where you can simply choose the body style that suits your lifestyle.
