Test Drive of the X-BOW GT, a Sports Car Developed by Motorcycle Manufacturer KTM
The "X-BOW" is a sports car developed by KTM, the world-renowned motorcycle manufacturer from Austria. It features a carbon monocoque main frame with a four-cylinder turbo engine mounted midship. As it was created by staff specializing in racing and high-performance motorcycles, its intensity is genuine. This time, Tomoyuki Shimada test drives the latest grade, the "KTM X-BOW GT," which was conceived as a model with weather protection added to the standard X-BOW, allowing for long-distance touring as its name suggests.

Translating KTM Motorcycles Directly into Automobiles
Given that you are viewing the automotive content on this web magazine, "OPENERS," I imagine you possess a certain discerning taste when it comes to cars.
Perhaps this involves a presence that effortlessly captures attention, a level of quality that justifies its price, a rarity that sets it apart from the everyday, or a sportiness that delivers more than you expect when you desire it. I suspect many believe that possessing all these qualities is ideal.
However, cars that perfectly embody all these traits are not easily found. Yet, here is one such vehicle. While it might deviate slightly from your imagination, it undoubtedly fulfills those criteria. It is the "KTM X-BOW GT".
If you have an interest in motorcycles, you are undoubtedly familiar with the KTM name. They are a globally acclaimed Austrian motorcycle manufacturer specializing exclusively in high-performance and racing motorcycles; their lineup contains no practical vehicles. Their philosophy is centered on "experiencing sport with your vehicle."
Therefore, when KTM unveiled the X-BOW sports car in 2007, while some were surprised that a motorcycle maker had produced a sports car, those familiar with KTM found the choice of category unsurprising. This is because the X-BOW is akin to a KTM motorcycle translated directly into an automobile, conveying their intentions with straightforward clarity.

A Striking Presence
The X-BOW's origins are also remarkably straightforward. A carbon monocoque forms the main frame, to which an aluminum rear frame is attached, housing a mid-mounted four-cylinder turbo engine. The Italian firm Dallara, a veteran racing car constructor, was involved in its joint development. The front suspension utilizes a pushrod system, and the underside of the car is completely flat, designed to create aerodynamic downforce that presses the vehicle to the road. It's akin to a two-seater Formula 1 car.
The plastic outer panels are also designed to generate aerodynamic downforce, pressing the car onto the road and increasing tire grip. Combined with the flat underbody, this design effectively produces downforce even without a prominent rear wing.
The styling, characterized by the exposed monocoque, including the front suspension, and the floating outer panels, was handled by KISKA Design, which oversees all of KTM's design elements, from their motorcycles to their corporate identity and printed materials.
It shares the same design ethos as KTM motorcycles, resulting in a unique aesthetic. While opinions may vary, its form undeniably commands immediate attention, and it's difficult to find any similar vehicles. It possesses a truly striking presence.
Another notable feature is the surprisingly high quality of its components for a car of this nature. The carbon monocoque boasts robust rigidity and a beautiful finish, and the outer panels are also meticulously crafted.
KTM's commitment to quality is exceptionally strong. This is evident in their successful acquisition of power units and transmissions from Audi, and the fact that a plan was once considered to distribute the X-BOW through Audi's sales network.
The resulting X-BOW, with its ample performance for enjoying circuit driving, including one-make races, offered an extraordinary experience in everyday driving and allowed for intense sport driving on winding roads. It was highly acclaimed as an all-around sports car.

A Sensation Akin to Driving a Formula Car
Given that this is a car highly regarded by those in the know but not widely recognized, I've provided a lengthy introduction. Now, let's turn to the main subject: the "X-BOW GT." This is the latest grade, designed with moderate weather protection added to the standard X-BOW, making it suitable for long-distance touring as its name implies. The X-BOW, lacking even a windshield and doors, offers a sensation akin to driving a Formula car, amplifying the enjoyment through its sheer intensity.
However, while the small aerodynamic screen somewhat mitigates wind pressure, the wind still directly hits your face, and small stones can be kicked up. If it rains, you simply get wet. It's excessively Spartan. Thus, the "GT" was added to the series, featuring a windshield and upward-opening side windows, along with a simple soft top capable of withstanding speeds up to 100 km/h.
This weather protection is exceptionally well-executed. The windows, shaped with 3D curves, appear delicate but are surprisingly robust. The upward-opening side windows feel sturdy enough not to crack with a firm close, and their satisfyingly secure fit is impressive. Furthermore, the relatively upright angle of the windows and the absence of any obstructing frame at the top ensure unobstructed visibility and maintain a sense of openness.
Moreover, when cruising at speeds well over 100 km/h, there is minimal wind intrusion, no unpleasant wind noise from the windows, and even in light rain, driving above 60 km/h prevents raindrops from hitting your face. The height and curvature of the windows are masterfully engineered.
By gaining this weather protection, the inherent qualities of the X-BOW shine even brighter.
The car's inherent rigidity and well-articulated suspension contribute to a firm, yet surprisingly supple ride. Even on rough roads, it remains remarkably comfortable. The addition of windows significantly reduces fatigue caused by wind resistance.
Consequently, the X-BOW is not a cruel joke; it has become a car capable of far more comfortable long drives than anyone might imagine. There is nothing lost in exchange for gaining weather protection.

Indulge in Pleasure at Will
However, that is secondary. The true essence of this car is revealed only when you press the throttle deeply. The mid-mounted 1,984cc four-cylinder turbo engine produces 285 hp at 6,400 rpm and 42.8 kgm of torque at 3,200 rpm. Although the GT is nearly 50 kg heavier than the standard X-BOW due to the addition of windows, its total weight is only 847 kg. The power-to-weight ratio is 2.97 kg/hp. This figure is nearly identical to that of theAudi R8, which is powered by a 525 hp, 5.2-liter V10 engine.
What this means is an astonishingly potent acceleration. Just as the turbo's power begins to surge around 3,000 rpm, it explodes towards the redline, propelling the driver into the realm of speed with the force of a 500 hp supercar.
The chassis remains exquisite. With a wheelbase of 2,430 mm and a track of 1,672 mm front and 1,626 mm rear, it is short and wide. Lacking electronic aids such as ABS or traction control, which are now standard even in sports cars, one might anticipate a thrillingly unpredictable driving experience.
However, while it precisely attacks the apexes like a sensitive mid-engined car, its overall behavior is remarkably predictable and easy to control. The fundamental characteristic is that the nose tucks in sharply as if guided by the rear tires, and when the rear tires begin to slip due to excessive power application during cornering, it does so smoothly rather than abruptly.
Once accustomed to it, the car exhibits such tractability that one could enjoy power oversteer in a steady-state circle until dizziness sets in. This sense of unity between car and driver is truly irresistible. The sharpness of its handling, its boundless fun, and its intense thrill are potent, regardless of whether it has windows.
The X-BOW is perhaps the automotive equivalent of a naked super-sport motorcycle. In any case, it is undoubtedly a superb, well-crafted sports car that exudes a vibrant presence, commands respect simply by being driven, and delivers exceptional performance. Furthermore, unlike previous X-BOW models, the X-BOW GT allows you to set off at any time, driven by your mood, without excessive concern for the weather.
While it is entirely unsuitable for elegantly escorting a lady in a beautiful gown, I believe it is an optimal choice for a man to indulge in other magnificent pleasures at will.
