The newAudiA3 Sportback” has finally landed in Japan. While sharing a platform with the Volkswagen Golf of the same group, this five-door hatchback model, imbued with Audi's distinct premium world, has been test-driven in its basic "1.4TFSI" and the "1.8TFSI quattro" which combines a 1.8-liter direct-injection turbo with four-wheel drive.Golf” and the "Golf" from the same group, this five-door hatchback model, imbued with Audi's distinct premium world, has been test-driven in its basic "1.4TFSI" and the "1.8TFSI quattro" which combines a 1.8-liter direct-injection turbo with four-wheel drive.

Compact, Yet Uncompromised Audi Premium World

The popular premium C-segment model that forms the backbone of Audi's lineup, the Audi "A3 Sportback," has undergone a full model change for the first time in 10 years. The third generation model, following the first generation introduced in Japan in 1966 with the concept of a "small premium car" and the second generation introduced in 2004, features a completely redesigned interior and exterior in line with Audi's current clean and modern aesthetic. It also boasts a lighter body, more efficient engines, and the newly developed "Audi connect" infotainment system that allows for in-car Wi-Fi usage. This model change truly embodies the image of an "advanced Audi."

Developed based on the platform of its sister model, the Volkswagen Golf, the new A3 Sportback features a high-quality, modern exterior design using Audi's latest design language, similar to other Audi lineups. The wheelbase has been extended by 60mm to 2,635mm, and the overall length has increased by 35mm to 4,325mm. Its condensed form, as if carved from a solid block, is not ostentatious but exudes a strong sense of luxury.

In line with the global downsizing trend, the car is also envisioned as a successor for owners of larger D- and E-segment models, necessitating a high level of quality and luxury. The conventional notion of "small equals cheap" is entirely absent in the A3 Sportback. Its maneuverability and the ease of parking without concern for space are significant advantages for urban owners.

Of course, its urban aesthetic is also captivating. In any case, there is absolutely no hint of the "cheapness" often found in compact cars. Instead, it conveys a sense of deliberate choice driven by lifestyle, which is quite remarkable. The term "car class" even feels obsolete.

The front face of the A3 Sportback clearly expresses Audi's current design language with its singleframe grille and LED headlights. Meanwhile, the rear offers a dignified design reminiscent of the A4 Avant, with similar design elements such as the line running between the left and right combination lamps.

Simple Yet High-Quality Interior Finish

The interior is simple yet finished to a high standard. With a dashboard made of soft-touch materials and high-quality switches, it embodies the familiar Audi feel. The air vents, designed with a circular motif, evoke a connection to the previous model. This reuse of design elements is a welcome consideration for existing owners.Audi” feel. While the wheelbase has been extended, the cabin doesn't feel significantly larger; perhaps due to the gradual expansion of all dimensions. However, with the rear seats folded down, the luggage capacity expands from the standard 340 liters to a maximum of 1,220 liters, a substantial increase from the previous model's 1,120 liters.

The engine lineup includes three options: a 1.4-liter direct-injection turbo with outputs of 90kW (122ps) and 103kW (140ps), and a 1.8-liter direct-injection turbo with an output of 132kW (180ps).

The 1.4-liter engines are paired with a 7-speed S tronic transmission and are front-wheel drive. The "1.8 TFSI quattro" features a 6-speed S tronic and, as the name suggests, Audi's renowned quattro all-wheel-drive system.

These are fitted to the "1.4 TFSI," "1.4 TFSI COD (Cylinder On Demand)," and "1.8 TFSI quattro" respectively. The 1.4-liter engine is paired with a 7-speed S tronic transmission and is front-wheel drive. The "1.8 TFSI quattro" features a 6-speed S tronic and, as the name suggests, Audi's renowned quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Significant Weight Reduction Despite Steel Body

The models tested were the "1.4 TFSI" and "1.8 TFSI quattro," both equipped with a 1.4-liter direct-injection turbo engine. The "1.4 TFSI COD" is scheduled for delivery soon.

Even with its modest 1.4-liter displacement, the "1.4 TFSI" delivers maximum torque from 1,400 rpm, providing ample power for both city driving and highway acceleration. The dual-clutch 7-speed S tronic shifts gears smoothly and quickly, allowing you to reach desired speeds almost imperceptibly.

The 6-speed S tronic in the "1.8 TFSI quattro" offers a similar feel to the 7-speed, but with stronger torque and a more sustained acceleration. Combined with the stable traction provided by the quattro system during acceleration, the 180ps output is truly impressive. The throttle response is also notably superior.

However, if asked which engine is recommended, I would say the "1.4 TFSI" is plenty enjoyable. This is significantly aided by the approximately 60kg weight reduction, bringing the vehicle's weight to just 1,320kg. While it naturally lacks the absolute power of the "1.8 TFSI quattro," the "1.4 TFSI" offers a delightful agility on winding roads, providing a clearer sense of control over the car. In essence, its ability to deliver substantial driving pleasure even with its small displacement positively influences the overall impression.

The "1.8 TFSI quattro," equipped with sports suspension, offers a quick steering feel and a distinctly sporty character. Its high agility is also a key attraction.

Ultimately, it may come down to personal preference, but the standard A3 Sportback, with its well-articulated suspension that allows for enjoyable cornering, also provides ample fun without making the quattro feel like a compromise. I want to add that this impression allows for a confident choice without feeling inferior.

Enjoy Comfortable Wi-Fi Use Inside the Car

In addition to these fundamental automotive merits, another noteworthy feature is the newly developed infotainment system, "Audiconnect." The A3 Sportback is also making headlines as the first model in Japan to feature Wi-Fi functionality.

Simply put, it's like equipping the car with a router that can connect up to eight mobile devices. This Wi-Fi function not only allows connection to your smartphone but also enables enhanced MMI navigation features, such as internet searches and displaying Google images and Street View on the navigation system.

For example, you can preview unfamiliar locations using Street View images, making it easier to visualize the surroundings. This is particularly helpful when searching for dining spots, as you can check the restaurant's facade and the availability or ease of parking nearby in advance. It promises to make driving smarter.

The basic menu includes news, weather, parking and nearby airport searches, as well as flight information and rankings of gas stations by distance or price, offering considerable practicality. While we do recommend reading the manual thoroughly, the intuitive operation is also appealing to those accustomed to smartphones.

Incidentally, "Audi connect" is an optional feature with a 3-year contract. The procedures are handled by the dealer at the time of vehicle registration when purchasing a new car, eliminating the need for owners to go to a telecommunications company, which is a welcome convenience.

Although it uses a 3G connection, the convenience and novelty of viewing such information on a 7-inch color display inside the car can be addictive once experienced. Of course, one could connect a PC and work in the car, but wouldn't it be more efficient to enjoy the sporty drive of the A3 Sportback, reach your destination quickly, and then focus on your work? I found myself contemplating such thoughts.
