Test Drive of the 2014 Volvo V60
The Volvo 60 series, first unveiled in 2011, has received its first exterior design refresh and arrives as the 2014 model. With the introduction of the latest safety technologies, including 'Cyclist Detection,' it offers an enhanced package that meets drivers' increasing demands for safety. Fumio Ogawa test drove two 'V60' models, the sporty wagon variants of the 60 series.

The V60, Further Refined with a Minor Change
The Volvo 'V60,' positioned as a sports wagon, recently underwent a minor change.'Cyclist Detection'Along with this, safety features have been enhanced. On August 27, 2013, the V60 received a minor change along with its sedan counterpart, the 'S60.' In Japan, it is popular as a sporty station wagon, accounting for 60% of sales compared to the S60's 40%.
The model lineup is as follows.
V60 T4 (3.99 million yen)
V60 T4 SE (4.29 million yen)
V60 T6 AWD (5.59 million yen)
The models test-driven were the newly introduced 'V60 T4 SE (4.29 million yen),' equipped with features like paddle shifters, and the top-grade 'V60 T6 AWD (5.59 million yen)' with an on-demand all-wheel-drive system.
The T4 SE, powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo engine producing 180 hp, is expected to be the best-selling model among the three. The new LED-integrated headlights and the sharp design from the grille to the bumper give it a more robust impression, enhancing its appeal.
The T6 AWD, on the other hand, features a 304 hp, 3-liter inline-six engine mounted transversely, paired with a Haldex on-demand all-wheel-drive system (AWD is a Volvo sub-brand). This on-demand system is typically front-wheel drive but efficiently distributes torque to the rear wheels on slippery surfaces where front-wheel torque distribution is challenging.
Both models offered a refined driving experience, with smooth power delivery and a comfortable ride. The T6 AWD, in particular, delivered performance befitting its price, with the smooth engine feel of a six-cylinder and a supple ride.

Which Should You Choose: Six-Cylinder or Four-Cylinder?
One of the key features of the new V60 is the updated interior and exterior. The striking new design of the headlights, front grille, and integrated front bumper is described by Volvo as a 'low-slung sporty styling.' The headlights are modern LED units, while the frameless grille emphasizes a sporty image, featuring a large 'Iron Mark' emblem.
Inside, the shift knob has a new design for a more comfortable grip. The seats have also been redesigned, with sports seats available as an option on some models, enhancing the youthful image.
In driving, both V60 models offer a refined feel, with a firm suspension setup that encourages spirited driving. The T4 excels with strong low-end torque, providing quick acceleration that feels particularly agile in city driving.
In contrast, the T6 offers the pleasure of its smooth-revving six-cylinder engine. While the four-cylinder engine's maximum torque of 240 Nm is available from 1,600 rpm, a slight dip in torque is noticeable around 2,500-3,000 rpm.
The T6, with its 3-liter six-cylinder engine producing 304 hp at 5,600 rpm and 440 Nm of torque between 2,100-4,200 rpm, delivers seamless torque, offering the joy of driving with an engine that loves to be revved. Although only the T4 qualifies for eco-car tax reductions, the T6 is a model that will not disappoint if your budget allows.
As mentioned, the T6 features an on-demand all-wheel-drive system. While lighter than a full-time AWD system, it does not compromise agility, similar to the V40. Steering response is linear throughout the range, from the center position to full lock, feeling sufficiently nimble.

Balancing Design and Comfort
For this test drive, we set out from central Tokyo in two V60s, heading towards Chiba via the Aqua-Line. The T6, in particular, demonstrated excellent noise insulation, with low levels of road noise from the wheel wells, wind noise around the A-pillars and mirrors, mechanical noise from the engine, and exhaust sound. Some wind noise around the tailgate was noticeable, but this is perhaps inherent to vehicles with a hatch gate.
The stylish two-tone leather seats, primarily in white, are sculpturally designed, not only looking good but also offering excellent seat comfort and upper body support. Even after extended periods of sitting, there was no discomfort.
Achieving both design and comfort seems to be a constant theme for Volvo. This is evident in the seats, as well as the dashboard design, including the center console. Essential switches are placed for intuitive, blind operation by the driver, making it easy to access information and control climate or audio systems.
In terms of practicality, the V70 (from 4.79 million yen) with its more upright rear gate might be superior. However, the V60 possesses a blend of functionality and fashion that evokes excitement, akin to wearing New Balance sports shoes rather than hiking boots.
As mentioned earlier, the T6 AWD embodies this blend more strongly. This car would make an excellent everyday partner. Volvo's signature wide range of body and interior colors further enhances its appeal, which should be welcome news for those interested.

Meeting the Demand for Enhanced Safety
A significant feature of the new V60 (and S60) is the enhanced 'Safety Package.' Notably, the 'Cyclist Detection' function, utilizing a sensor system comprising an infrared radar, high-definition camera, and millimetre-wave radar, is a highlight. Like previous systems for detecting pedestrians and vehicles, this system identifies cyclists, who are harder to detect, and alerts the driver. If a collision is unavoidable, the car automatically applies full braking.
This cyclist detection function would be highly beneficial in Europe, where cycling is prevalent, and in Japan, where cyclists are encountered more frequently on the roads, making it a welcome safety feature for drivers. It is now included in the 'Safety Package,' available for the S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70, and S80.
Volvo's pioneering safety innovations are offered in the V60 as part of the 200,000 yen optional 'Safety Package.' This includes 'City Safety' (now active up to 50 km/h), which automatically brakes to avoid collisions; 'BLIS' (Blind Spot Information System); 'CTA' (Cross Traffic Alert); 'Full Active High Beam,' which automatically shades the high beams when oncoming traffic is detected; and 'Lane Departure Warning,' which alerts the driver if the car starts to drift out of its lane.
VW Golfand theMercedes-Benz E-ClassandS-Classfeature systems that intervene in steering to prevent accidents. However, the V60 uses a hydraulic steering system, so this particular function is not available.
Fortunately or unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to experience these features firsthand. However, it is entirely understandable that they are well-received in the market, catering to the desire for enhanced safety not only for those experiencing vision decline but for all drivers.
