The 8 Series Returns to the "Adult Coupe" Category
There's a category called the "adult coupe." It refers to a two-door coupe of a certain size, possessing a considerable degree of luxury. In the context of Japanese cars of the past, models like Toyota's "Soarer" or Nissan's "Leopard" might come to mind. These were aspirational vehicles of the 1980s.
Among imported cars, the Jaguar "XJS," Mercedes "SL," and the later "SEC" (which became the "CL") could also be considered. And let's not forget models like the Cadillac "Eldorado." These were cars for a mature, adult world, distinct from supercars. They were the kind of vehicles that looked good with a tweed jacket on while behind the wheel.
Now, looking at that category today, there's a rather well-stocked lineup. This includes the Mercedes-BenzS-Class Coupe, Aston Martin'sDB11, and the BentleyContinental GTseries.
Furthermore, recently, four-door coupes that bring practicality to the two-door coupe concept have also entered the market. Examples include the Audi "A7 Sportback," Mercedes-Benz "CLS," and Porsche "Panamera." They possess an allure, a "lustre," that traditional three-box sedans lack.
Apologies for the long preamble, but the new BMW "8 Series" has entered this market. For those over forty, the word "revival!" might spring to mind, as the 8 Series with its retractable headlights existed in the 90s. I recall a certain famous professional baseball player, who later achieved great success in the majors, driving one.
The 8 Series has finally returned. However, it's important to note that this naming is due to BMW's current lineup strategy, and it has no direct relation to the previous model. It features the latest platform shared with the 7 Series, equipped with the newest powertrain and interface.

Convertible and Gran Coupe to Follow Next Year
It was unveiled in Ginza, Japan, at the beginning of November, but I had the chance to drive it about two weeks prior. The international press drive started in Lisbon, Portugal. While Munich, BMW's home base, was already getting quite cold, this country at the westernmost edge of Europe was still enjoying early autumn weather.
The test drive was in the BMW "M850i xDrive." This all-wheel-drive model is powered by a 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine, boasting a maximum output of 530 horsepower. The lineup also includes the "840d xDrive" with a 3-liter inline-six diesel turbo, but it was not available at the test drive venue.
At the event, future plans for the 8 Series were also announced, and they are quite significant. A convertible is scheduled for release next year, followed soon by a four-door coupe, the Gran Coupe. Additionally, the top-tier "M8" will reign supreme for both the two-door and four-door coupes. This promises to be something truly special. Concurrently, only the Gran Turismo will remain in the 6 Series lineup; all other variants will be sold until stock lasts.
Returning to the BMW M850i xDrive, its styling gives a distinctly wide and low impression. In fact, compared to the existing 6 Series Coupe, the overall length is slightly shorter, the width is increased, and the height is reduced. The angles of the front and rear pillars are, of course, even sharper.
Furthermore, as the "M" designation suggests, this model is equipped with features that enhance its sporting performance, such as a front lip spoiler, side air breathers, and a rear spoiler. In essence, its imposing presence is doubled. Add to that the 20-inch exclusive alloy wheels, the large brake rotors peeking through, and the navy-calipered brakes bearing the "M" initial, and it's a tenfold increase!

What Was the Drive Like at Estoril, Once the Stage for the Portuguese Grand Prix?
Upon entering, I felt that the interior, unlike the exterior, prioritized luxury over a spartan feel. While the leather seats and trim are understated, they exude a chic impression. The controls on the dashboard are tastefully arranged and modern. The overall atmosphere is one of calm sophistication.
Looking down, the crystal-like shift knob gleams. That's a nice touch. There's ample space in the driver's seat. With a low hip point, even someone over 180cm tall like myself wouldn't find the headroom an issue. However, regarding the rear seats, well, let's just say expectations should be managed.
So, what was the driving impression? Actually, the program began with a track test. Specifically, a test at the Estoril circuit, which was once used for the F1 Portuguese Grand Prix. It's a proper layout, just over 4 kilometers per lap.
Of course, the driving was led by a pace car, but even while matching our speed, the pace car constantly pushed for more, allowing us to reach considerable limits.
Even in such conditions, the car remained remarkably stable, conveying a sense of deep capability. The chassis responded adeptly to steering inputs during acceleration and deceleration, moving as if anticipating the driver's intentions. It was a moment that highlighted the advanced technology of BMW, honed by its "M" experience.
However, under the demanding conditions of track driving, the brakes didn't offer the immediate, powerful bite of a racing car. But their reliability was undeniable. After five laps, including cool-down, they performed consistently. This suggests excellent heat resistance and dissipation.

Balancing High Performance on the Track with Comfort
After the track session, the drive continued onto highways, winding roads, and city streets. I deliberately focused on simulating everyday use during this phase, primarily using the "COMFORT" drive mode. In this setting, the M850i xDrive revealed a different facet, distinct from its formidable racing machine persona on the track. It was simply comfortable in every driving scenario.
The electronically controlled dampers provided an excellent ride, and the power steering, while retaining directness, shed its quickness. Naturally, it was also enjoyable on winding roads. Rather than aggressively attacking corners, it navigated them with a nimble, agile feel, effortlessly flowing from one curve to the next. It truly felt like an "adult coupe."
During the dinner after the press drive, I mentioned this comfort to the chief engineer, who confirmed that it was indeed the car's focal point and what they aimed to achieve: the harmonious blend of high performance on the track and everyday comfort. Given that comfort had already been realized in the 7 Series, the dual objective seemed paramount. Judging by the results, this goal has been successfully met.
The car I test drove at the event was in a body color called Sunset Orange Metallic. It was a hue perfectly suited to the Portuguese setting. While white, black, and silver are standard choices in Japan, embracing such an option is also valid. Perhaps the selection of an adult coupe should be more about personal freedom.
This is my initial impression of the new 8 Series from my time in Portugal. The perception might change when driven on Japanese roads, but the impact of a coupe like the 8 Series existing is significant. While SUVs are appealing, the cityscape would transform with more cars like this. It would add a certain sophistication, a sense of mature composure. In any case, expectations are high for the return of the "adult coupe."
