Test Drive of the Cadillac ATS

Positioned by Cadillac as an entry-level luxury sports sedan, the ATS is a meticulously crafted vehicle designed to directly challenge the core models of German premium brands like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, and Audi A4 in the D-segment.Launch in Japan is Imminent, Kenichi Sakurai had an early opportunity to test drive the ATS.

Rivals Include the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series

Exactly one year ago, in January 2012,Detroit Motor Show at theWorld Premiere, the ATS, which garnered significant attention in North America as the smallest Cadillac, is finally set for release in Japan.

In the past, Cadillac did offer D-segment models primarily for the European market, such as the front-wheel-drive Cadillac BLS, which competed in the same category as the Mercedes-Benz " C-Class" and BMW's " 3 Series". However, these were essentially badge-engineered vehicles and could hardly be considered pure Cadillac models.

The BLS, which originated from the Saab 9-3 (formerly under GM) and more distantly from the Opel Vectra, was even exhibited as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show. Unlike that model, the ATS was developed from the ground up, inheriting 100% of Cadillac's DNA, making it a true Cadillac.

The concept is entirely different.

Its development as a D-segment model with a newly engineered FR chassis underscores its serious commitment.

Cadillac itself introduces the ATS as a completely new entry-level luxury sports sedan, focusing on "design," "performance," and "technology," and this description holds true.

"Art & Science" Embodied in its "Design"

The ATS, featuring the most compact body in Cadillac's North American lineup to date, possesses a cohesive and distinctive appearance that immediately identifies it as a modern Cadillac.

Cadillac describes this design philosophy with the keyword "Art & Science."

In essence, it represents the embodiment of futuristic quality, beauty, and technological prowess. It clearly differentiates itself from other brands, showcasing the luxury worldview that America projects to the world.

The body style is both sporty and elegant, a characteristic shared with current Cadillac models like the CTS, SRX Crossover, and the flagship Escalade SUV. There is no wavering from this design language.

From any angle, these models unmistakably represent Cadillac, establishing a consistent design identity.

This consistency is maintained in the ATS, which serves as the entry-level model. Its high level of quality is on par with European luxury cars from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi.

While the ATS appears to have a conventional three-box design at first glance, its exterior incorporates numerous cutting-edge aerodynamic features, such as active grille shutters that automatically close at higher speeds to reduce drag and underbody panels designed to optimize airflow.

The distinctive rear stop lamp also functions as a spoiler, contributing to the ATS's remarkably low drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.299.

If the adoption of a distinctive design is considered "art," then the body design, which benefits both fuel efficiency and top speed, might be seen as the "science" aspect.

Intuitive Infotainment System "CUE"

Beyond its exterior, the ATS also impresses with its meticulously crafted, modern interior that exudes craftsmanship. The quality surpasses its class, living up to the image of Cadillac as a luxury brand.

The instrument panel flows seamlessly into the door panels, creating a sense of unity within the cabin. This slightly snug cockpit emphasizes the car's driver-focused nature.

The "CUE (Cadillac User Experience)" system, controllable via the 8-inch multi-touch display integrated into the central instrument panel or the steering wheel, is a state-of-the-art electronic device that operates like a tablet PC or smartphone.

This system, characteristic of IT-advanced America, allows for intuitive control of Bluetooth audio, hands-free calling, climate control, and vehicle settings. However, it's worth noting that this advanced feature isn't perfect for the Japanese market; the navigation system is not compatible, requiring a separate retractable navigation unit to be installed on the dashboard.

"Performance" Unbecoming of a 2-Liter Four-Cylinder Engine

While the ATS boasts high-quality interior and exterior design, its appeal extends beyond aesthetics.

The driving experience, powered by its newly developed FR chassis and a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine with variable valve timing, is another highlight of the ATS that should not be overlooked. The engine's responsive performance, delivering 203 kW (276 PS) of maximum power and a strong, flat torque curve (353 Nm) from 1,700 to 5,500 rpm, makes you forget it's a "four-cylinder" or a "2-liter" engine.

It pairs well with the 6-speed automatic transmission, providing immediate acceleration without lag, regardless of speed. One would never guess it's merely a 2-liter, four-cylinder engine.

However, the true unsung hero behind this "sporty" performance is the robust yet lightweight body, achieving a torsional rigidity of 29 kNm/degree with a white body weight of only 301 kg.

To further reduce weight, the body extensively utilizes aluminum in the powertrain and suspension systems, including the engine hood, subframe, and suspension components. Consequently, the ATS achieves an ideal weight distribution of 50:50. Combined with a total weight of 1,580 kg, this contributes significantly to its sporty driving dynamics.

The body's solidity also contributes to a comfortable ride, with minimal unpleasant vibrations and jolts. The engine sound subtly entering the cabin likely enhances the sporty feel, without being intrusive. While the suspension feels slightly firm, the taut setup, reminiscent of European cars, is quite agreeable.

The ATS also excels in its agile handling. Its responsive nature, mirroring the driver's intentions, can only be described as sporty. While it may seem simple, precisely controlling a vehicle without delay is a challenging feat. Maintaining seamless synchronization between human senses and mechanical operation is, in fact, a highly sophisticated task. These subtle details reveal the car's advanced engineering.

Fully Equipped Safety Features: The Latest "Technology" Beyond European Cars

The test vehicle is the "Luxury" grade, which was released earlier, equipped with 17-inch all-season run-flat tires. The combination felt well-matched. In the past, all-season and run-flat tires were often associated with compromised ride comfort and handling, but modern iterations have completely changed that perception.

The higher "Premium" grade, incidentally, comes with 18-inch high-grip summer run-flat tires. Unfortunately, right-hand drive models are not available; all versions are left-hand drive only.

The "Premium" model includes nearly every available safety device, such as forward collision alert, lane departure warning, full-speed adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking (collision mitigation braking). It's essentially a "fully loaded" package.

Cadillac describes this as creating a "shield-like detection barrier around the vehicle," and a look at the features confirms this is not an exaggeration. While Volvo and Mercedes-Benz might first come to mind when thinking of "safety," the ATS also offers world-class measures for preventing accidents and protecting occupants.

The image of a "luxurious and plush American car" is now a thing of the past.

European cars are undoubtedly the mainstream leaders in the global luxury automotive market. For those who firmly believe that European cars are the pinnacle of performance and quality, the Cadillac ATS is a must-see. It has the power to erase preconceived notions of "American cars" and redefine the benchmark for "premium D-segment vehicles" worldwide.

It is sure to challenge your existing perception of "American cars" in the best possible way.
