Test Drive of the Newly Introduced X3
The new BMW "X3," just announced in Japan this October. While its more active exterior and the latest safety and driver assistance systems are highlighted, are these the only new features? Fumio Ogawa takes the diesel model for a spin to find out.

Diesel Model Introduced First
The BMW "X3" is popular in Japan as an SUV that offers enjoyable driving while maintaining a manageable size and spacious interior. The third generation, which underwent a full model change, was released in October 2017, and a test drive opportunity was provided in November.X3" The third generation, which underwent a full model change, was released in October 2017, and a test drive opportunity was provided in November.Third Generation Fully RedesignedThe new model's lineup includes 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. Both are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW's full-time four-wheel-drive system, xDrive.
The gasoline engine model is called the X3 xDrive 20i, producing a maximum output of 135kW (184ps) and a maximum torque of 290Nm. This model will be released in early 2018. The diesel X3 xDrive 20d will be available for delivery slightly earlier.
The X3 xDrive 20d's 1,995cc 4-cylinder diesel engine delivers 140kW (190ps) and 400Nm. The manufacturer's stated fuel economy is 17.0 km per liter (JC08 mode). Considering the popularity of diesel BMWs in Japan, this is expected to be a strong seller.
The diesel X3 xDrive 20d was the model test-driven for this report. Among the available specifications – "Standard," "xLine," and "M Sport" – this was the "M Sport" variant, featuring dedicated settings for the suspension and AT shift timing for a sportier feel.

A Car for Driving Enthusiasts
The body size is nearly the same as the previous generation model introduced in 2011, although the wheelbase has been extended by 50mm. While specific figures for interior changes are unavailable, the rear seats offer ample legroom, making it a comfortable size for four adults.
The biggest highlight of the third generation, as stated in BMW's press release, is the enhancement of its equipment, including "the full range of BMW Group's cutting-edge technologies, such as innovative driver assistance systems that enable partial autonomous driving."

Although the maximum torque is available from 1,750rpm, the point where the car feels most responsive and accelerates firmly in response to subtle pedal inputs is just before 3,000rpm.

This strongly reinforces the notion that this is a car for driving enthusiasts. Among SUVs, its concept leans heavily towards sedans rather than off-road capability. In this sense, its positioning as a crossover vehicle has been maintained.

Nevertheless, the engine noise is kept very low, and with sound insulation measures throughout the cabin, the interior comfort is by no means poor. As mentioned earlier, there is ample space, feeling more than sufficient for four occupants.

State-of-the-Art Safety and Driver Assistance Systems
For those who use this car daily, the enhanced safety features and driver assistance systems are likely significant attractions. One such system is "Driving Assistant Plus," which intervenes in steering, acceleration, and braking.
This includes "Steering & Lane Control Assist," a system that uses stereo cameras to follow the vehicle ahead. It is complemented by a system that supports steering wheel operation to maintain lane centering.

Conventional features such as Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, front and rear cross-traffic warning, lane departure warning, and collision mitigation braking are also integrated.
The price starts at 6.62 million yen for the X3 xDrive 20d (the X3 xDrive 20d M Sport tested here is 7.10 million yen), and the gasoline engine X3 xDrive 20i, to be introduced later, starts at 6.39 million yen.
