Test Drive of the New S-Class

The current Mercedes S-Class, introduced in 2013, has undergone a minor facelift. While the exterior shows little change, many components have been renewed, including engines that have undergone downsizing. True to its flagship status, the S-Class is equipped with the latest electronic driver assistance and safety features. Fumio Ogawa took it for a test drive to assess its advancements.

Downsized V8 Engine

Mercedes-Benz's flagship, theS-Classhas received a major update. The current model, announced in 2013,marks its first significant change.

The S-Class debuted in 1972. At the time, it was also called the "Super" Mercedes, with "S" standing for Super.

As a "Super" model, the S-Class is packed with cutting-edge technology. In recent years, the interpretation of "best technology" has shifted towards advanced safety and driver assistance systems, giving the latest models a distinct advantage.

This situation might be a headache for Mercedes developers (though they deny it), but with the changes implemented in the summer of 2017, the S-Class has acquired the technological substance befitting a top model.

While changes made mid-cycle are typically called minor facelifts, this S-Class has undergone such significant modifications that "major update" feels more appropriate than "minor facelift."

Mercedes states that 6,500 parts have been renewed. The engine, the most crucial part of a car, akin to the heart in a human, is particularly noteworthy.

This major update introduces several new engines. This is significant news. One is a 3-liter inline-six engine, available in both gasoline and diesel variants.

Since the straight-six will not be available in Japan for some time, let's focus on the V8 engine, which is popular in Japan. The new model features a 4.0-liter engine, down from the previous 4.7-liter (S 550) (the European model name is S 560).

While the displacement has decreased, likely improving fuel efficiency, the power has increased from 335 kW (455 hp) to 345 kW (469 hp) (the maximum torque of 700 Nm remains unchanged).

This engine, which Mercedes engineers proudly call the "most fuel-efficient V8 engine," is equipped with a cylinder deactivation system. While it delivers substantial maximum output and torque, its focus on efficiency makes it a truly state-of-the-art engine.

Its fuel consumption is 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers (European standard). Converted to the familiar Japanese fuel economy notation, this is approximately 11.8 kilometers per liter.

The new V8 engine lives up to expectations.

Two distinct qualities achieved in near-perfect balance

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, for which Mercedes-Benz held a test drive event in the summer of 2017, is exceptionally well-driven, especially the S 560 equipped with the newly developed 3,982cc V8 engine.

It is said that the V8 engine has a particularly strong following in Japan among S-Class buyers. Many appreciate the acceleration provided by its robust low-end torque and the deep, resonant exhaust note.

The S 560 does not disappoint (as expected). Its torque from low revs is substantial, offering satisfying performance by 2,000 rpm.

Simultaneously, the ride comfort is excellent, with the suspension system adeptly absorbing all road imperfections, ensuring passengers experience no discomfort.

The S-Class has featured a system since its debut that uses stereo cameras to scan the road surface and adjust the air suspension's stiffness accordingly.

The new S-Class boasts improved camera performance, enabling this function to operate at higher speeds (up to 180 km/h). Additionally, a system to control body roll when cornering has been implemented.

Mercedes integrates these technologies with satellite navigation to maintain a flatter posture even when cornering (this applies to Europe, primarily Germany).

What is always impressive about Mercedes vehicles is the near-perfect balance between two seemingly opposing qualities: excellent ride comfort and exceptional cornering agility. With precise steering and stable body control, you can drive with confidence regardless of speed or cornering radius.

The S 560 is equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission. While it typically shifts to higher gears for fuel efficiency, its ability to maintain the optimal torque band for corners is remarkable. The surge of power when accelerating out of a turn is impressive.

Also driven was the Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC. It too features a new 4-liter V8 engine, replacing the previous 5.5-liter V8, indicating a trend towards downsizing.

Conversely, the maximum output has increased from 430 kW (585 hp) in the previous 5.6-liter model to 450 kW (612 hp). The maximum torque of 900 Nm remains unchanged. This is truly immense power.

It is incredibly fast. Even the long-wheelbase version, measuring over 5.3 meters, can be maneuvered as if it were a compact sports sedan. This is a testament to the extensive know-how AMG has accumulated from racing Mercedes' large sedans since 1971.

Gripping the small, tactile steering wheel and settling into the supportive seat, pressing the accelerator unleashes a ferocious dash. The structural rigidity felt at that moment is characteristic of the top-tier S-Class.

Integrated control of comfort features

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class can be considered top-class in terms of advanced safety. Using stereo cameras and radar, it actively avoids potential collisions not only with vehicles ahead but also with vehicles and pedestrians approaching from the sides.

An interesting demonstration at the test drive venue involved a simulated dummy vehicle emerging from the side. The car braked at the last moment.

The collision was avoided, and if the path ahead was clear, the car immediately accelerated. In some situations, the computer even intervenes with steering wheel input.

The collision was avoided through steering, followed by acceleration. In essence, it doesn't hesitate but continuously moves forward. In Japan, the tendency might be to come to a complete stop first, but Mercedes prioritizes forward momentum. This highlights a difference in philosophy.

In Germany, satellite navigation is linked with the driver assistance systems. Approaching a curve, the car decelerates, the suspension stiffness is adjusted to control body roll, and even the high beams dim before corners.

Another feature that Mercedes technicians enthusiastically demonstrated was the automatic parking system. Parallel parking and bay parking can be accomplished with the press of a button.

While nose-first parking is common in Europe, one wonders if the back-in parking method, typical in Japan, is also supported. Europeans, perhaps less accustomed to it, might find this feature particularly useful.

The interior comfort is significantly enhanced by a new system called "ENERGIZING Comfort Control." In essence, it integrates and controls various comfort features.

The S-Class offers numerous comfort amenities, including climate control, aromatherapy, music, lighting, seat heating and cooling, and even integrated seat vibrators. These are activated through six keywords.

Mercedes-Benz S 560

For example, selecting "Vitality" transforms the cabin environment for 10 minutes into what Mercedes believes will invigorate the driver.

A fast-tempo song is selected from the music library, and the ambient lighting shifts to a reddish hue (if I recall correctly). Conversely, "Relax" offers a more serene atmosphere.

During a test drive, the schedule is so packed that one cannot fully appreciate these features. The rear-seat environment, in particular, can be customized in various ways, especially with the optional First Class package. However, I'll save that for a day when I can truly own one – a day that may never come.
