Test Drive: Volvo XC60 T5 R-Design
Volvo sales are strong in Japan. Previously, the sporty "R-DESIGN" grade was only available for the all-wheel-drive "T6" model of the mid-range SUV "XC60." However, a new "R-DESIGN" has now been added to the lineup for the front-wheel-drive "T5" model. OPENERS asked Tatsuya Kushima to test drive this newly added "XC60 T5 R-DESIGN."

Volvo, Yacht Racing, Adventure Spirit
Volvos are becoming increasingly common sights on the streets lately.XC60and the new generation of designs that followed,S60andV60mean that it's rare to go a day in the city without seeing one.
And it's no wonder, as sales are strong. In Japan's import car market, which is dominated by German manufacturers, Volvo is standing out on its own. This is likely due to its stylish form, tasteful equipment, and the increasing awareness of safety features like City Safety and Human Safety. Just two or three months ago, we test drove the new V40 overseas, which is more compact than the 60 series.V40This model was also very well-executed. Although it won't arrive in Japan until 2013, it's sure to be popular as soon as it's released. With that in mind, I feel Volvo's winning streak will continue.
Perhaps it's between the "60 series" and the arrival of the new generation "40 series," but Volvo has been introducing more special editions lately. Just recently, the "Ocean Race Edition" was added for the "V60," "V70," "XC60," and "XC70."Ocean Race EditionThese specifications, inspired by racing yachts speeding across the open sea, create an appealing world that draws in even those who don't consider the sea a hobby. From the perspective of someone who has covered the Volvo Ocean Race overseas,I went to cover the Volvo Ocean Race overseasthe value of the Ocean Race Edition seems higher overseas than in Japan. Especially in Europe, the equation "Volvo = Yacht Racing" is firmly established, and people strongly associate this brand with an adventure spirit.

R-DESIGN Added to T5
Regardless, the "R-DESIGN" has now been added to the "XC60 T5." With the addition of another highly appealing and valuable grade to the popular "XC60," we couldn't miss the opportunity.
But first, let's review the "XC60" lineup once more.
Previously, the "XC60" offered the 2-liter turbo "T5" and the 3-liter turbo "T6." The former has a maximum output of 240 hp and front-wheel drive, while the latter produces 304 hp and uses all-wheel drive. The 1.6-liter turbo (180 hp) "T4," found in the "V60," is not part of the lineup. This is likely a decision based on the judgment that the benefits of this engine would be lost in an SUV with its considerable weight.
And the "R-DESIGN" was previously offered only for the "T6" with its six-cylinder engine. It was essentially a special edition for the higher trim level. Therefore, it was naturally positioned at the top of the price range.
However, this time, "R-DESIGN" has been added to the "T5" as well. Of course, considering that the "T4" in the "S60" and "V60" already has it,T4 has itthis is a natural progression. The sporty and elegant features of the "R-DESIGN" are now more accessible, which is great news for customers. After all, it's also more affordable than the "T6" "R-DESIGN."

Was it this sporty?
Looking at the specifics, the exterior changes include the grille, wheels, side mirrors, and exhaust. Visually, it gives a more luxurious impression with the gleam of chrome. The interior features leather sports seats, a sports steering wheel, and redesigned pedals and gauges, also giving it a slightly more luxurious feel.
However, the "R-DESIGN" doesn't stop at just the appearance. It incorporates dedicated sports suspension with increased damping force, contributing to a sportier ride. The 20-inch low-profile tires not only enhance the look but also, as one might expect, contribute to this sporty performance.
So, after driving for a bit, I found myself asking, "Was the Volvo always this sporty?" This is because the suspension feels tighter, and the ride is slightly firmer. Furthermore, the winding roads of our test course really highlighted this characteristic. Compared to the standard "T5," body roll in corners is reduced, and grip is noticeably improved.
The new generation 60 series already offered a considerably sporty driving experience, and the "R-DESIGN" further enhances this. Moreover, while delivering this sporty feel, the flat torque curve from low RPMs makes the car easy to handle, which is a typical Volvo characteristic.
In terms of safety, the "T5 R-DESIGN" continues to come standard with City Safety, and Human Safety is available as a manufacturer option. Volvo spares no effort when it comes to safety. I recall hearing that the attachment rate of Human Safety in Japan is exceptionally high compared to other countries.
This also signifies a high priority placed on safety by the owners. I remember the engineers at the headquarters being quite pleased about this. It's wonderful when technology developed by people with a strong awareness of safety is adopted by those who share the same values. I believe Volvo has significant potential to continue selling well in this country.
