Test Drive: The New Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG

Mercedes-Benz introduced the M-Class as an SUV built in North America, primarily targeting the North American market. An AMG model has now been added to its third generation. Tatsuya Kushima, a motoring journalist, test drove the new model, which features a 5.5-liter V8 twin-turbo engine that balances high performance with environmental efficiency.

Previous Models Were AMG's Cash Cows

AMG develops and manufactures Mercedes' high-performance models. Once known in Japan as "Ah-Mah-Gah," it was a tuner that handled various Mercedes car modifications. Today, as a division of Mercedes-Benz, it releases high-performance vehicles to the world.

For AMG, whose work targets a small market, the ML63 AMG introduced here is an important model. This is because SUVs are now big-selling cars on a global scale. The market size is incomparably larger than for convertibles or coupes. In fact, since the release of the ML55 AMG in 1999, AMG versions of the ML-Class have sold 24,000 units, which is quite impressive.

Before detailing the ML63 AMG, it's important to understand that the base M-Class underwent a full model change for the 2012 model year. Although not yet introduced in Japan, this was achieved by refining the previous W164 model. The new model's codename is W166. The fact that the number has been skipped suggests the degree of evolution. While the 3.5-liter V6 gasoline and 3-liter V6 diesel engines are carried over, the key point is a 25 percent improvement in fuel efficiency.

Design Retains a Familiar Concept

An AMG version has quickly followed, based on this. While retaining the same model name, ML63 AMG, as the previous model, the powertrain has completely changed. However, as you can see, the design maintains the existing concept. As it's a successful model, there are no drastic changes. Notable features include the large air intakes below the front grille and the specially designed AMG light-alloy wheels. The color, called Titanium Grey, is truly excellent. The distinctive twin tailpipes are also finished with great taste. It possesses ample elements that make you want it based on looks alone.

New Engine Balances Power and Low Fuel Consumption

Although the new model shares the same model name as the previous one, the engine has transitioned from a 6.3-liter V8 naturally aspirated unit to a 5.5-liter V8 twin-turbo. This marks a switch from AMG's M156 engine code to the M157. Consequently, maximum power has increased from 510 hp to 525 hp. Furthermore, a Performance Package is available, similar to the SLS AMG, which delivers 557 hp. These figures now surpass those of the Cayenne Turbo and Range Rover.

However, a characteristic of this engine is its balance of power and fuel efficiency. It features direct injection with high-pressure piezo injectors and incorporates a start/stop function. As a result, the impressive 28 percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the previous model is noteworthy.

Front-to-Rear Torque Distribution Changed from 50:50 to 40:60

The transmission is the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic, a tuned-up version of the 7G-Tronic for standard models. According to the development lead, this transmission is preferred in North America due to the high usage of towing with SUVs, making it more practical than a dual-clutch system where torque transfer is interrupted.

Another new feature is the fixed 40:60 front-to-rear torque distribution for the 4WD system. Compared to the standard model's 50:50 split, this clearly indicates a focus on driving dynamics. Reducing understeer at corner exits and improving behavior during cornering makes driving enjoyable, even in an SUV. This is precisely AMG's forte.

An Experience Akin to Driving on a Racetrack

To describe the ML63 AMG's driving experience in one word: "monumental." The robust torque generated from low RPMs powerfully propels the car forward, accelerating with seemingly endless vigor. Moreover, the accompanying sound is incredibly satisfying. From the high 3,000s, a sound reminiscent of a racing car emerges, becoming a full-throated roar in the mid-4,000s. Beyond 5,000 rpm, you are drawn into an experience akin to driving on a racetrack. Utilizing the paddles behind the steering wheel allows you to further savor this sensation with rev-matching downshifts. You might even forget you're driving a tall vehicle.

The same can be said for cornering. The Active Curve System effectively suppresses body roll, allowing the car to navigate corners with a flat posture. Unlike simply using thicker stabilizers, its natural operation is remarkably pleasing. Such tuning is truly exceptional.

Choose the Normal Specification for Overall Balance

The braking performance was also remarkable. The confidence-inspiring ability to control the heavy body is outstanding. This stopping power allows you to confidently press the accelerator.

During this test drive, I experienced both the standard ML63 AMG and the Performance Package version. The differences lie in the engine output, brake capacity, and wheels, as mentioned earlier. While the normal version uses 265/45R20 tires, the latter uses 295/35R21. Considering ride comfort and everyday usability, the normal version seems perfectly adequate, as the tire size suggests. Even the normal version boasts 525 hp. For an SUV, that's more than enough. Nevertheless, it's a fact that AMG has prepared even higher-performance models. They are confident that there is a demand for them...
