Ferrari's Approach to the "Environment"

Automakers face two environmental challenges. One is reducing environmental impact, primarily global warming. The other is adapting to diverse market conditions, including those in emerging economies. While these issues may seem contradictory—one moral, the other business-related—even Ferrari cannot escape them. Indeed, precisely because Ferrari is supported by owners who bear significant social responsibility, it should be a leader in addressing these concerns.

Ferrari has proactively addressed the latter challenge early on by diversifying its V8 models, which are its main sellers and have the most customer touchpoints. As part of this strategy, they built a new factory with state-of-the-art equipment on the grounds of their Modena headquarters. However, the focus is not on production speed but on improving work precision and density, as evidenced by the remarkably leisurely takt time of every 30 minutes.

The California was conceived to utilize the production capacity of that factory. As a 2+2 with occasional rear seats and a retractable hardtop, it's somewhat of an outlier in Ferrari's lineup. Furthermore, it's priced more affordably than any other current model. Consequently, the media often highlights its role as an entry point to the brand.

Of course, it would be untruthful to say Ferrari has no aspirations in this regard.

With the expectation of the highest sales volume across its entire lineup, developed with significant investment, and offering ample practicality and comfort, a Ferrari that opens its roof with the push of a button should be able to attract a new customer base. It's hardly surprising that this was the plan.

First Adoption of Dual-Clutch 7-Speed AT

Indeed, when driving the California, the first rival that comes to mind is the Mercedes-Benz SL. For over half a century, it has held an unshakeable position in the luxury and sports car world, recognized as the king of open-top cars. The fact that the California evokes such a comparison speaks to its high level of refinement as a daily sports car.

Regarding ride comfort, there are no complaints during normal driving on everyday roads. The California's comfort at regular speeds is that refined. A major factor supporting this is the dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission, a first for Ferrari. Ferrari, which pioneered the 2-pedal sports car with its F1-derived transmission, has created a system that works in synergy with the mechanism, eliminating shift shock and operating with the precision of a fine watch. Even when frequently using lower gears, it doesn't feel jerky. Instead, it efficiently selects gears for optimal fuel economy and moves the car discreetly without drawing unnecessary attention to itself.

The Joy of Driving an Open-Top Ferrari

While used in this manner daily, if one wishes to indulge in a special mood, the California offers two options. The first is to fully open the metal hardtop using a button on the center console. In less than 20 seconds, the Ferrari transforms into a skillfully aerodynamic open-top car. As the roof system was handled by a German supplier, the cabin environment when closed is virtually identical to that of a 2+2 coupe. Therefore, the sense of freedom when open is particularly striking. The structural rigidity remains solid, with scuttle shake and floor vibrations minimized. Above all, the pleasure of driving a Ferrari with the top down needs no further words.

The Most Friendly Ferrari in History

And for the other option, to let the exhaust sing out loud, simply flick the paddles on the steering wheel. With an immediate, precise blip of the throttle to raise the revs, the California unleashes its unmistakable Ferrari sound, delivering performance more than adequate for a modern supercar.

What's remarkable is the ample chassis reserve that supports such spirited driving. Although not a light car due to its well-appointed interior and complex roof system, the weight distribution is a favorable 47:53, slightly rear-biased, a trend among high-powered FR models. The rear end is tuned to provide excellent traction and grip, likely aided by the multi-link suspension, another Ferrari first. Meanwhile, the front end offers solid grip and feedback, allowing the driver to approach corners with confidence. The California embodies Ferrari's ability to create a car with such broad appeal, making it undoubtedly the most user-friendly model in their history, designed for ordinary people to enjoy sporty driving.

Mid-mounted V8 Direct Injection Unit Produces 578 hp

Alongside its user-friendliness, the mid-engined V8 model, a hallmark of Ferrari, has always been tasked with outperforming its global rivals in terms of speed. The arrival of the California has allowed Ferrari to focus solely on refining performance. With this in mind, the 458 Italia emerges with all its solutions revamped.

The most telling figure showcasing its serious intent is likely the engine output. The 4.5-liter V8 direct-injection unit produces a peak power of 578 hp. Astonishingly, this is achieved at 9,000 rpm. In other words, it boasts a high-revving, high-output engine unprecedented in history, but understanding that this is not an exaggeration requires the right place and the right mindset.

An Engine of Terrifying Madness

From a standstill, the engine's revs are so immediate that even the traction control struggles to keep up, leaving one utterly astonished. As it shifts through second and third gears, the relentless, unyielding acceleration leaves you speechless. Yet, upon closer examination of this acceleration, you realize it enters the 9,000 rpm redline without hesitation, continuing its surge where most sports cars would falter around 7,000 rpm. Without the limiter, the engine would surely break. Such responsiveness is impossible to manage with a manual transmission, and on public roads, even full throttle is too fast to sustain. This engine, a terrifying blend of madness and performance, arguably surpasses even the Enzo and F50. It shares similarities with the F40, but this is a production model. The fact that such an engine is produced on a mass-production line is unthinkable for other manufacturers.

What's more, the 458 Italia is incredible because it has a chassis that perfectly matches this devastatingly powerful engine. The key lies in the coordinated control of two electronic devices: the "E-Diff" and "F1-Trac." These systems, selectable via a red knob on the steering wheel, ensure optimal performance in any driving situation. While the "Manettino" system is now standard on all production Ferraris, the 458 Italia's modes are predominantly set for sporty driving, allowing for flexible adaptation to track use. This underscores the car's focused character for sporty driving.

The 458 Italia's Form, Infused with Speed

As you press the accelerator, the car grips the inside of corners with remarkable tenacity, offering a level of cornering stability akin to a high-tech all-wheel-drive system, combined with the agile handling characteristic of a pure mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive package. The 458 Italia's fundamental characteristics align with the ideal envisioned by many sports car manufacturers. However, absorbing 578 hp is no easy feat, even with racing car technology.

This is where the 458 Italia's hidden key technology, aerodynamics, comes into play.

From the shape of the quarter panels to the small ducts on the front fenders and even the material of the front grille louvers, every inch of the 458 Italia's form is imbued with the rationale for its speed. Indeed, when driving the 458 Italia at high speeds, the downforce increases as speed rises, pressing the car into the ground. This sensation remains unwavering even during cornering, when airflow changes.

Few current production cars, apart from the GT-R, offer such a profound sense of how aerodynamic forces translate into speed. Furthermore, the 458 Italia achieves this with a design that is unmistakably Ferrari yet never feels dated.

Driving both cars again reinforces the idea that Ferrari, as a company, never clings unnecessarily to the past in its manufacturing. While it may seem like a company that embodies tradition as an unshakeable value, its products are consistently infused with new proposals and challenges. This policy is evident when looking back at its past models.

Ferrari recently announced that from the 2012 model year, all production models will be equipped with "HELE," a start-stop system for idling. The response from the top brand in sports cars to the environmental challenges they face is expected to have a significant impact on this category going forward. The California test car already featured this system, and its operation is remarkably quick and natural, unlikely to cause any dissatisfaction for users.

Indeed, the V8 line's expanded range, designed to meet growing demand and needs, is imbued with a potential that leads the era. The 458 Italia's styling, free of any waste or contradiction, eloquently testifies to this.
