The Second "AMG Sport" Model Arrives in the C-Class

Test Drive: Mercedes-Benz C 450 AMG 4MATIC

At the Geneva Motor Show in March, Mercedes-BenzAll-New C-Classunveiled the second "AMG Sport" line model, the "C 450 AMG 4MATIC" Based on the "C 400," which is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine not available in Japan, this new model features chassis and exterior elements inherited from the Mercedes-AMGC 63" model. We asked Hisami Sato to test drive this new model, which bridges the gap between the standard line and AMG, to find out what it's like.

The Second AMG Sport Model

"AMG Sport" ModelYou might not be familiar with this grade. Before we discuss the car itself, let's first touch upon the Mercedes "brand."

Mercedes rebuilt its brand with the revival of Maybach. The "Maybach" for "Luxury" and "AMG" for "Sport" now serve as sub-brands to the parent "Mercedes" brand.

Incidentally, the previous Maybach models did not carry the "Mercedes" name. Also, AMG models, such as the "C 63 AMG," were renamed to "AMG C 63," with AMG preceding the model name.

And newly created under the AMG brand is the "AMG Sport Model." These models embody AMG's brand slogan, "Driving Performance," and aim to attract a broader target audience. Their definition is: "Based on the top model of a model line, incorporating AMG's body styling and technology."

Following the "GLE 450 AMG Coupe", the second AMG Sport model announced is the "C 450 AMG 4MATIC." While the top-tier model in Japan's "C-Class" is the "C 250 Sport" with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbo engine, the "C 400 4MATIC" with a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine exists in its home market. This, therefore, serves as the base for the AMG Sport model.

A Different Beast from the AMG C 63

The output of 270 kW (367 hp) at 5,500-6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 520 Nm at 2,000-4,200 rpm are paired with the "7G-TRONIC PLUS" 7-speed automatic transmission.

While the AMG C 63 features an enlarged body size, the C 450 AMG 4MATIC shares the same dimensions as the standard model. The exterior design, including the front grille, spoilers, rear diffuser, and side skirts, closely mimics the AMG model, making it difficult to distinguish at first glance. However, the AMG logo is quite understated. The sporty yet stylish, yet not overly aggressive, atmosphere leaves a favorable impression.

The test drive of the C 450 AMG 4MATIC took place on the same day as the AMG C 63. Specifically, it was afterCircuit Test Drive in the "C 63 S"had concluded.

Normally, driving a higher-end model first tends to set a benchmark, making subsequent impressions less impactful. It's like tasting a light sake after a robust one, or fruit after dessert. However, despite having just experienced peak performance, this car was accepted as something entirely different, much like a dessert that fits into a separate stomach.

Overall, there's a sense of light, pleasant agility. From the smooth revving of the V6 engine, its clear sound not as deep as a V8, to the lightness of the suspension and the feel of the tires on the road, the entire powertrain and running gear feel like they are operating in seamless harmony.

The 4MATIC system, which distributes torque with a 33:67 front-to-rear bias, offers the stability of AWD while retaining an FR-like driving feel.

Uncompromising Quality

Like the AMG models, it is equipped with a drive mode selector offering five settings: "Eco," "Comfort," "Sport," "Sport Plus," and "Individual," allowing for adjustments based on driving conditions and preferences. The "Sport" and "Sport Plus" options remain for those who desire a sportier drive.

The suspension is said to be the same as that used in the C 63. It's surprising that even the spring and damper rates are identical. Of course, the ride quality of a car is not determined solely by these components. Weight, drivetrain, and weight distribution also differ. Furthermore, the bushings and tire brands/sizes are different. Nevertheless, unlike the firm impression of the C 63, this car offers a supple ride feel.

Moreover, the same engineers who developed the C 63 were involved in the development process and testing. The body rigidity values are also reportedly almost the same. Considering this, with less power than the C 63, it could be considered over-engineered, and this sense of refinement and余裕 (yoyuu -余裕) is reflected in its driving dynamics. The overall balance was impressive.

The AMG C 63 is a high-performance model befitting its top-tier status. However, its imposing and substantial exterior design, conversely, is quite conspicuous. According to Mercedes engineers, users in many countries prefer designs that directly reflect performance. But for those who appreciate the understated "if you know, you know" approach of older AMG models, the AMG Sport models are recommended. Furthermore, for those who might use the car on weekdays and only drive it on weekends, it would be easier to convince a spouse, considering its looks, comfort, and price point.

While the performance can be fully enjoyed on a track, there might be situations where the AMG's power is excessive for daily driving. For such individuals, this driving experience, which allows them to fully appreciate AMG quality even in everyday situations, is highly recommended.

The C 450 AMG 4MATIC demonstrated uncompromising quality, living up to the AMG name.
