JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE | Test Drive Impressions of the New Jeep Grand Cherokee

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE

A Refined Off-Road 4WD for a New Era

The new Grand Cherokee boasts a stylish exterior, a premium interior, and impressive off-road capabilities. Its unique driving feel, distinct from European SUVs, might be worth experiencing at least once. The coupe-like exterior, which also suits urban driving, is equally appealing.

Unified by a New Generation V6 Engine

The new Grand Cherokee, launched by Chrysler Japan on March 12, 2010, is equipped with a newly developed V6 engine. It features the "Quadra-Trac II" four-wheel-drive system for superior off-road performance and the "Selec-Terrain" system, which allows selection of five drive modes based on driving conditions. The Laredo, a higher-grade model, also includes an air suspension system that adjusts vehicle height according to road conditions.

A notable aspect of the new Grand Cherokee is its adoption of the timely downsizing concept. The power unit for the Japanese market models has been unified to a newly developed 3.6-liter V6 DOHC.

Previous Grand Cherokee models featured larger engines: 4.7-liter, 5.7-liter, and even 6.1-liter (all V8). The decision to unify to a 3.6-liter V6 is bold, but Chrysler Japan, the importer, states that the power is sufficient and this engine was chosen for better fuel efficiency.

Indeed, upon driving, there is no sense of lacking power. The tachometer displays an "Eco Zone" between 1,000 and 2,000 rpm, suggesting that driving within this range likely yields good fuel economy. This is a useful guideline for cruising at highway speeds. Beyond 2,500 rpm, the engine truly comes alive. It responds crisply to accelerator input, with torque surging powerfully. The five-speed automatic transmission is also calibrated to keep the engine in effective torque bands for drivers who want to push it, contributing to a strong sense of power.

A Robust 347Nm of Torque Delivers Distinctive Strength

The steering response is commendably precise. Given the nature of this vehicle, overly quick responses could be hazardous off-road, but the tuning here feels expertly handled. It conveys a clear sense of the direction of the wheels while maintaining straight-line stability, preserving a unique steering feel.

The standard "Selec-Terrain" system works in conjunction with the "Quadra-Trac II" 4WD system. Its key feature is the ability to select from five modes via an in-car controller: "Sand and Mud," "Sport," "Snow," "Rock," and "Auto." The objective is "optimal performance on any road" (Chrysler Japan), and it integrates with traction control, throttle control, shift programming, transfer case, and ESP.

What sets the Grand Cherokee apart from its European rivals is its acceleration feel. Likely due to the considerable suspension travel required for its off-road prowess, the vehicle exhibits a gentle, swaying motion on certain road surfaces. While this never feels unsettling, it combines with the acceleration, supported by a substantial 347Nm of torque, to create a distinctive sense of power that might be described as American. This is likely a major draw for Grand Cherokee enthusiasts.

Refinement has significantly improved in the new model. The high level of quietness is particularly striking. While the engine intake sound can be noticeable under hard acceleration, wind noise at highway speeds is relatively low, and road noise intrusion is minimal. With a 145% increase in torsional rigidity compared to the previous model, the floor feels exceptionally solid, likely aided by effective insulation. There are no jarring vibrations felt through the soles of the feet, conveying a strong sense of luxury. Chrysler Japan's statement that "materials used in the interior were selected with emphasis on the tactile impression" is clearly evident.

A Sporty Design Approaching Fastback Style

The new Grand Cherokee's wheelbase has been extended by 135mm compared to the previous model, increasing rear legroom by 100mm. Meanwhile, the overall vehicle length has been kept to a modest 30mm increase. The width has increased by 55mm, enhancing interior spaciousness. Furthermore, the door openings are now 11 degrees wider, significantly improving ease of access. This is a truly user-centric evolution.

A quote from a product design representative in the press materials states, "The mission of the Jeep design department was to re-examine the Grand Cherokee's design from scratch and find new meaning in Jeep's premium appeal." Indeed, while maintaining the 7-slot grille design identity, the new Grand Cherokee features a steeper rear hatch angle, giving it a fastback-like, sporty profile. The use of synthetic resin and chrome parts on the fenders and front grille appears to be reduced, lending it a more car-like ambiance.

In English, there's the word "geek," which in a positive sense implies a playful, toy-like quality. Jeep products from Chrysler have always possessed this somewhat geeky charm. From the base Patriot to the Wrangler and Cherokee, they all share a sense of playfulness, like a man's toy. However, the Grand Cherokee takes a step further, making it suitable for female drivers and featuring a globally appealing, elegant styling. Consequently, its competitiveness is likely high. This is a Jeep for a new era.
