A Larger, Stylish Luxury Saloon
To summarize the Audi A8's characteristics in one phrase: light, safe, and fast. Its body, built on the all-aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) concept, sets it apart from other Audi models. This is combined with the Quattro all-wheel-drive system. This combination, arguably the symbol of Audi, differentiates it from other brands and has resulted in high popularity in Europe.
The new model, announced at the end of 2009, is larger than the second generation that debuted in 2002. The body, mounted on a wheelbase extended by 47mm to 2997mm, measures 5137mm (82mm longer than the previous model) in length, 1949mm (54mm wider) in width, and 1460mm (10mm taller) in height. Although the height has increased slightly, the extended length and width give it a distinctly lower profile. Audi's unwavering commitment to style, even in a luxury saloon, is evident here.
The model offers a rich array of engine options in its home market, starting with the 4.2 TDI diesel engine boasting high torque. In Japan, a model equipped with a 4.2-liter direct-injection gasoline engine producing a maximum output of 273kW (as per the home market specifications) is planned for introduction. The transmission will be an 8-speed automatic.
A Tight Yet Comfortable Seat
The exterior features redesigned headlamps incorporating new LED strip lighting, giving the front mask a more aggressive look. However, the overall impression, contrary to its actual size, appears more compact than the previous model. This is likely due to the well-balanced proportions, including the relationship between the body and wheels, and the front-rear balance. The designer's intent seems to be to convey a sense of agility.
The interior features sculpted seats and other elements that enhance the sense of exclusivity. Similar to the exterior, the impression is not one of spaciousness, but rather a snug, driver-focused environment. The seats, which provide excellent support, are so comfortable that they make you forget you are in a large saloon exceeding five meters in length. Combined with the direct steering feel, this allows for a pleasant driving experience.

Straight-Line Stability Inherited from Quattro
While it feels slightly heavy at the start, acceleration is good, and thanks to the Quattro system, it exhibits excellent straight-line stability. The engine revs smoothly, with a sporty surge of power from 2500rpm, and gear changes are gentle. However, on the Autobahn from Munich Airport toAudiIngolstadt, where Audi's headquarters are located, one would find that a first gear, a top gear, and one additional gear for acceleration would suffice.
The suspension setting on the test car was relatively mild, and the lack of harshness even at the rear left a strong impression. Heavy cars tend to have better ride comfort due to higher unsprung weight. The A8 further excels in its skillful absorption of road imperfections, with no shocks transmitted to the cabin.
A Welcome Suspension Setting
The A7 Sportback, announced in Europe after the A8, also features a suspension tuning that prioritizes comfort. While Audi's suspension settings previously pursued sportiness with a degree of firmness, this apparent shift in philosophy towards a more comfortable setup is to be welcomed.
The cabin is remarkably quiet; even as the engine speed increases, the noise level does not rise significantly. Wind noise is also kept to a minimum. As you accelerate, the scenery outside blurs dramatically, indicating that you have entered a high-speed range. The new A8, with its styling and overall impression of agility, is a car that truly conveys a sense of solid evolution.
