The World's Best-Selling Volvo Gets a Four-Cylinder Model (1)
The Volvo XC60 crossover is now available with the "T5 SE" model, featuring an economical 2-liter turbo engine. Volvo Car Japan announced its release on August 6, 2010. The price is 4.99 million yen, with sales beginning in late August.

Engine Downsizing and Front-Wheel Drive
The XC60, first unveiled in autumn 2008, is described by Volvo Car Japan as "the world's best-selling Volvo." Its defining characteristic is the crossover concept, which merges the ruggedness of an SUV in the lower half of the body with the elegance of a coupe in the upper half.
In Japan, only the 3-liter model was previously available. However, the XC60 ranks second in sales among Volvo's lineup, following the V50 and V70. Compared to rivals, it surpasses the BMW X3 andAudiachieves over 60% of the Q5's sales volume."
The newly added XC60 T5 SE is characterized by its engine downsizing and the adoption of front-wheel drive. While retaining the core of the previous unit, the engine has been newly developed as a four-cylinder with various enhancements. It features a direct fuel injection system combined with a turbocharger.
Fuel Efficiency Improved by 8% with Dual-Clutch System
The engine delivers a maximum output of 203ps at 6000rpm and a peak torque of 30.6kgm between 1750 and 4000rpm. The exhaust manifold, integrally molded with the turbocharger housing, is a world-first. Its benefits include achieving both high peak power and ample torque at low RPMs, along with reduced thermal inertia in the turbine and manifold.
The transmission is a 6-speed dual-clutch system jointly developed by Volvo and Getrag. This system enhances responsiveness and acceleration while achieving approximately 8% better fuel economy compared to conventional torque converter automatic transmissions.
As a new generation safety feature, the "City Safety" low-speed collision avoidance and mitigation automatic braking system, already equipped in the XC60 T6 SE AWD, comes standard on this model as well. The vehicle automatically controls braking; if the speed difference with the vehicle ahead is 15km/h or less, it avoids a collision, and if it's 30km/h or less, it mitigates rear-end collision damage.

For Owners Who Enjoy Snow Sports
The handling feels nimble. This is likely due to the 140kg weight reduction compared to the T6 SE AWD, which combined a straight-six engine with a four-wheel-drive system. From the moment you start, the car feels light on its feet. The turbo kicks in above 2500rpm, pulling the car forward assertively, but there's sufficient torque in the lower rev range for practical use. There's no unnatural turbo lag, and the power delivery is refined.
The benefit of the reduced weight is also evident in the handling. The steering response is good, and the car's agility feels light as it follows the steering input. The six-cylinder model had a torque of 440Nm, providing a powerful driving feel that effortlessly moved the car despite its weight. However, the four-cylinder model offers a more natural sensation due to its lighter weight. It's a pleasing driving experience.
While acceleration is overwhelmingly superior in the six-cylinder, by utilizing the wet dual-clutch system with manual shifting and maintaining revs above 2500rpm, the acceleration of the 2-liter engine is not bad, even with the substantial body. Most importantly, the torque delivery follows a natural curve, suggesting confidence even on snowy roads.
Although it doesn't feature a four-wheel-drive system, with adequate ground clearance, front-wheel drive is sufficient for most snowy conditions. Therefore, for owners who enjoy snow sports, the XC60 T5 SE, priced one million yen lower than the six-cylinder model, is a realistic choice.
Interior Evokes a Sense of Craftsmanship
The interior design is a true testament to Volvo's excellence. The three-dimensional design of the seats is inviting, making you want to sit in them. Optional two-tone leather upholstery is also available, so those who prefer a more vibrant aesthetic should consult the catalog.
The thin, bent-plate-like center console, known as the "Free-floating Center Stack," is angled towards the driver in the XC60 for improved usability. Furthermore, befitting a premium model, the chrome trim features a "Thin to Thick" design theme, adding character and skillfully conveying a sense of dynamic craftsmanship.
Integrated Child Cushions, a built-in type, are available as an option for the rear seats. Utilizing hidden hinges, the seat cushion lifts to become a child booster seat. This is a clever marketing move by Volvo, considering families with children. However, when not in use, the seat cushion becomes firmer, so purchasing a separate child seat or booster might be preferable.
