From the City to the Suburbs: A Sharp and Beautiful SUV in Nature

After unloading the gear from the trunk, Tanaka began splitting firewood while Ino assembled the bonfire stand. Tanaka held an axe with an artistic pattern. He explained that it's from the New York outdoor brand Best Made, and he was one of the people who distributed it in Japan. He mentioned that the sturdy American-made axe has a thin blade, making it excellent for biting into wood. The trick to splitting firewood, he added, is not to swing the axe in a circle but to let it fall naturally from directly above the log to be split.
"With an axe that has good balance and grip, even a woman with average strength can split wood easily."
Ino then uses a hatchet to baton the split logs into smaller pieces, and further refines them into feather sticks with a knife. By creating fine shavings, the wood becomes easier to ignite. When combined with the oily pine needles, flames quickly sprang up.
Bonfires, unlike camping, don't involve pitching tents, preparing elaborate meals, or dealing with extensive cleanup. "Just gathering around the fire is satisfying enough, so unnecessary things and words are superfluous," says Ino. When asked why he has bonfires, he often replies, "Because there's firewood there (chuckles). You don't need a reason to gather around a fire, do you?" While he sometimes prepares food and drinks, the bonfire is about maximizing the time spent relaxing outdoors.
"I already had delicious coffee earlier, so I'll make some tea here."
With that, Ino placed a enamel kettle into the fire to boil water, then poured commercially available green tea leaves into a Sherpa cup and began roasting them over the flames, turning them into hojicha.
"You can't offer hospitality like this alone, can you?" says Ino.
"You want the person you're hosting to say it's delicious, right? (laughs)," says Tanaka.
"If you ask directly, of course they'll say it's delicious. Humans are greedy, aren't they? (roaring with laughter)," says Ino.
The two skillfully add wood to the fire without waste, warming themselves by the small embers. Their interaction resembles that of tea masters. While enjoying a refined sense of relaxation, Ino states, "The first step in leaving a place more beautiful than we found it is to burn everything completely and ensure the fire is properly extinguished." His meticulous actions are precisely why he is a bonfire master.
