Latest SUV Models Unveiled by Each Manufacturer

California is a region that global automakers consistently prioritize as the top market in the US. The Los Angeles Auto Show took place there from November 18, 2016. A characteristic of the US market in 2016 was the sales growth of large trucks (Americans refer to pickups and some SUVs as trucks), driven by low oil prices.

The show featured a variety of SUVs, clearly demonstrating the efforts of manufacturers from around the globe. From Jaguar's electric concept vehicle, favorably reviewed by USA Today as 'likely to give Tesla a headache,' the ' I-PACE'I-PACE,' to the captivating Alfa Romeo 'Stelvio,' a diverse range was on display. Japanese manufacturers were also highly engaged, with Toyota showcasing the compact SUV ' C-HR' which is slated for release in Japan in December, and Mazda unveiling the new 'CX-5' for the first time.

Nissan's exhibit was particularly interesting, featuring a large-scale collaboration with the new Star Wars film, 'Rogue One.' They leveraged the similar name of their SUV, the 'Rogue' (known as the X-Trail in Japan), to attract many visitors with Star Wars-themed displays. The life-sized TIE fighter, piloted by the Galactic Empire, was especially impressive, drawing crowds from afar. Apparently, other manufacturers grumbled, 'That's cheating.'

Alfa Romeo continues to be a brand with a strong image in the US. Following the high-priced new sedan 'Giulia' (comparable to Maserati's ' Ghibli'), they now unveiled the luxury SUV 'Stelvio' at the show, also priced similarly to Maserati's ' Levante'. The name 'Stelvio' sounds familiar; it originates from the Stelvio Pass, a famous driving route on the border of Italy and Switzerland, and is a fitting name to emphasize a sporty image. The Stelvio garnered significant attention.

The Stelvio's selling points include its powerful 510-horsepower, 2.9-liter V6 engine, developed with Ferrari's technology, as stated in Alfa Romeo's press release. It's also equipped with a 4WD system featuring an electronically controlled center differential, similar to that used by Maserati, which belongs to the same group. Additionally, a 280-horsepower, 2-liter four-cylinder model is available.

The 'MINI Countryman' also made its world debut. One of its key features is improved interior space, with the overall length increased by 20 cm compared to the previous model. Another significant addition is the plug-in hybrid model, the 'MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4,' capable of traveling 40 km on electric power alone.

Japanese manufacturers were not to be outdone.

Japanese Manufacturers Also Demand Attention

Amidst Mazda's characteristically black-themed booth, the new SUV 'CX-5' stood out. While retaining the image of the previous model, the new CX-5, soon to be released in Japan, features a coupe-like roofline and a more urban, sophisticated styling.

The new Mazda CX-5 will be offered with a 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter gasoline engine, as well as a 2.2-liter diesel. This will be Mazda's first diesel engine vehicle in the US. It is described as 'a model suitable for drivers who care about both performance and fuel economy' in Mazda's press release.

Toyota C-HR

Toyota unveiled the new SUV 'C-HR' at the Los Angeles Auto Show, ahead of its Japanese release. It is positioned as 'aimed at the large market of compact crossovers,' according to Bill Fay, Group Vice President of Toyota Motor Sales, USA.

However, this suggests a market that values not just compactness but also a fresh image, as seen in the overall body lines and the three-dimensional design of the rear combination lamps.

In Japan, the Toyota C-HR will be available with a 1.2-liter gasoline engine or a hybrid system using the same 1.8-liter gasoline engine as the Prius. In the US, it will be sold with a 144-horsepower, 2.0-liter engine and a CVT, with front-wheel drive. With sales planned for 50 countries worldwide, including Japan and Europe, Los Angeles marked the beginning. Fortune magazine's website commented, 'It's a car for young trendsetters, but perhaps its unique style and details will be well-received.'

Infiniti had two points of interest. The first is the variable compression ratio engine, 'VC-T.' The notable aspect is the practical application of technology that varies the compression ratio of the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder between 8:1 and 14:1 during operation. By combining it with a turbocharger, it optimizes control of the compression ratio during acceleration and high-speed driving, suppressing abnormal combustion to achieve both improved fuel economy and power.

'This engine delivers torque comparable to a 4-liter engine,' stated a Nissan Motor Corporation development representative. 'Its advantage is that it uses the same size as existing engines, allowing the use of current transmissions. Furthermore, it's possible to achieve even higher power output.' Does this mean the future for gasoline engines is still bright? Currently, production costs are slightly high, so it will be limited to Nissan's luxury brand, Infiniti.

The second point is related to the engine. The 'QX Sport Inspiration' concept was displayed next to it, possibly powered by the VC-T engine. This mid-size SUV concept was previously unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. With its new styling and new engine, it's certainly an appealing prospect.

European and Domestic American Brands

European manufacturers also brought numerous SUVs. In addition to Alfa Romeo and MINI, several other notable models were present. Audi displayed the ' Q5' which recently underwent a full model change. Utilizing lightweight materials, it is said to be up to 90kg lighter than the previous model. While the overall length of 4.66 meters has not increased, the weight reduction is expected to enhance driving dynamics.

Land Rover presented the new 'Discovery.' This fifth-generation model features distinctive thick rear quarter pillars in its exterior design, giving it a stylish atmosphere reminiscent of the 'Discovery Sport.' With a length close to 5 meters, it offers a 7-seater configuration. Furthermore, efforts to reduce weight have resulted in a significant reduction of up to 480kg.

The 'Discovery First Edition' is already available for order in Japan. The Japanese specifications offer two engine options: a 3-liter V6 gasoline and a 3-liter V6 diesel. It is reportedly popular in affluent areas of Los Angeles. The interior boasts an atmospheric design and materials, and the new model features advancements like smartphone control for folding the second and third-row seats.

Volkswagen showcased the 7-seater 'Atlas' at a large booth. Touted as having a third row spacious enough for adults, this relatively large vehicle is heavily promoted as 'made for America' in Volkswagen's press release. It is indeed manufactured at their Tennessee plant. Packed with advanced safety features, it emphasizes safety and comfort. Design Director Klaus Bischoff stated, 'We thoroughly researched how Americans use mid-size SUVs in their daily lives.'

Volvo highlighted the new 'V90 Cross Country.' Despite its nearly 5-meter length, the design emphasizes the long roofline, while the rear features a slope reminiscent of the ' V40' lending a dynamic, non-utilitarian feel. Both the V90 and V90 Cross Country are equipped with advanced safety technologies, making them reliable for long journeys. While a Japanese release is expected soon, the specific engine options remain unconfirmed.

Finally, the 'XT5,' an SUV that Cadillac plans to introduce to Japan in 2017, is drawing attention. This model, succeeding the current ' SRX', is positioned in the US as a competitor to Mercedes and Audi. Its key feature is the extensive use of Cadillac's expertise in lightweight technology, resulting in a body significantly lighter than its German counterparts. This achieves high levels of both fuel efficiency and handling.

Cadillac is inherently a brand that excels in SUVs. Returning to this strength, the company appears intent on increasing sales in the Japanese market, where premium SUVs are popular. Cadillac's exotic appeal, distinct from German or Lexus brands, is likely to resonate with those seeking unique imported cars in Japan. The introduction of right-hand drive models would undoubtedly further boost sales.
