Lexus Design Moves to the Next Generation

Lexus is drawing attention with the world premiere of the "LF-FC," a next-generation luxury sedan powered by fuel cells. While the Lexus booth at the Tokyo Motor Show featured numerous products, including new models, this large fuel cell vehicle was particularly captivating on press day.

The conference where the LF-FC was unveiled was packed with media, becoming so crowded 30 minutes before the start that movement was impossible. Then, Lexus International President Tokuo Fukuichi appeared. He unveiled this concept model, characterized by its smooth surfaces and a design that evokes a new era.

"The LF-FC shows the direction of the next chapter Lexus is pursuing," said President Fukuichi. It is a fuel cell vehicle that generates electricity by reforming hydrogen fuel to drive its motors. Based on rear-wheel drive, it also features independent in-wheel motors for the front wheels, likely intended to enhance cornering performance by actively controlling drive force during turns.

In line with recent Lexus design trends, the spindle grille is aggressively large, almost appearing to touch the road at its lower edge. The grille pattern, likely crafted with advanced computer technology, combines complex curves, and the subdued gloss finish enhances its special appeal.

The LF-FC's new direction, which seems to express beauty through its surfaces rather than the excessive lines previously used to create distinctiveness in Lexus styling, is a welcome development.

While other Lexus models at the venue were also under intense spotlight, this new-generation sedan possessed an unparalleled presence. The crowd around it remained dense throughout.

The new generation SUV shone particularly brightly.

New Generation SUV and Sporty Models Also Displayed

Another star at the Lexus booth was the large SUV "RX," which underwent a full model change in October 2015. It features an updated design with environmental performance in mind, including the availability of a smaller engine. In addition to the hybrid "RX450h" (from ¥6,025,000) combining a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with an electric motor, a new 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo gasoline "RX200t" (from ¥4,950,000) has been introduced.

According to Lexus, "The extended wheelbase (50mm longer than the previous model) and larger tire size achieve both a commanding proportion and a spacious interior." Seeing it under the spotlights at the venue, it presents a more stylish, coupe-like impression than its predecessor. Yet, it offers ample practicality with a cargo space capable of storing four 9.5-inch golf bags.

The larger SUV, the "LX570," also attracted visitors. The LX, first launched in 1996 as Lexus's inaugural SUV, is characterized by its large body measuring 5,065mm in length and 1,910mm in height. It offers three rows of seats and can accommodate up to eight occupants, proving popular in the US and the Middle East.

The LX570, touted as the ultimate luxury SUV, is equipped for both on-road and off-road driving. It features a drive mode selector allowing for settings from sport to economy. The air suspension maintains a flat posture during driving and automatically lowers the vehicle height when the engine is off, facilitating entry and exit. Furthermore, for off-road excursions, it includes "Crawl Control," which, in conjunction with cruise control, allows the driver to focus solely on steering while the vehicle manages acceleration and braking.

The "GS F," a sporty sedan slated for release within 2015, is likely to strongly appeal to those with a penchant for sporty on-road driving. This premium sedan is powered by the same 5-liter V8 engine found in the "RC F" and features an aggressive front fascia. Its interior impresses with a luxurious level of quality, poised to become a popular response from Lexus to rivals like Mercedes-AMG, BMW M, and Audi RS.

The venue also offers attractions on the second floor. In a space titled "Amazing Gallery," the "hoverboard" featured in Lexus TV commercials is on display. Lexus also highlights the experience of scents from "yuica," a Japanese aromatherapy brand used at "Intersect by Lexus" in Aoyama, Tokyo. The aim is to convey Lexus's craftsmanship and brand world, which values the five senses connected to the driving experience, at the auto show.
