Test Drive: Bentley Continental GT V8

Bentley Motors held an international test drive event for the new "Continental GT V8" based at the Hotel Marqués de Riscal, designed by Frank Gehry and located in Elciego, a town known for its wine in Spain. Here is an impression from Yasuhisa Shimashita, who participated in this test drive, including driving at the Navarra Circuit!

Overwhelmingly High Efficiency

Unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in Januaryprior to its public debut, the Continental GT V8 was unveiled at the press preview of the new Continental GTC held in Tokyo at the end of last year. The model was developed to offer users a more fuel-conscious option amidst growing environmental awareness. In reality, economy is unlikely to be a major concern for Bentley users. What matters is the image perceived by others and personal satisfaction. For such individuals, a car that appears indifferent to environmental issues is unacceptable.

The engine powering the GT V8 and the simultaneously announced GTC V8 is a 4-liter V8 direct-injection twin-turbo. While its displacement and cylinder count areGTtwo-thirds that of the 6-liter W12, the key specifications naturally meet the expectations for a Continental GT power unit. With a maximum output of 507 ps at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 660 Nm between 1,700 and 5,000 rpm, it achieves sufficiently powerful figures, albeit lower than the W12's 575 ps at 6,000 rpm and 700 Nm between 1,700 and 5,000 rpm.

What's more, its overwhelming efficiency is noteworthy. The EU combined fuel consumption is 10.5 L/100 km (approx. 9.5 km/L), compared to the W12's 16.5 L/100 km (approx. 6.1 km/L). CO2 emissions are reduced to approximately two-thirds, from 384 g/km to 246 g/km.

This is achieved through internal engine enhancements such as direct injection, reduced friction, optimized thermal management, and regenerative braking. The newly adopted variable displacement system, which deactivates cylinders, also plays a significant role. Furthermore, the newly paired 8-speed automatic transmission undoubtedly contributes greatly.

However, the idling stop system, which is becoming more common, is not installed. This is because Bentley believes that Continental GT customers do not necessarily demand it at this time. Customers are, after all, demanding.

In any case, improved fuel efficiency naturally leads to a longer driving range, with the Continental GT V8 capable of traveling over 800 km on a full tank. Environmental considerations have thus enhanced the car's inherent GT qualities.

Lively Engine and Agile Handling

Nevertheless, the most compelling aspect is likely its driving performance. Upon starting the engine with the start button, a deep, resonant sound fills the cabin. This alone is enough to pass the first hurdle, and the expectations are not disappointed once you start driving. Thanks to its exceptionally rich torque from low speeds, you experience a powerful surge that pushes you back into your seat the moment you rest your foot on the accelerator pedal.

The subsequent acceleration is equally intense. While the revving is not as refined as the W12, it is noticeably more agile. As the revs climb past 3,000 rpm, you clearly hear the distinct V8 beat, a "dodo-dodo-dodo..." sound. For fans who believe Bentley means V8, this is precisely what they've been waiting for. Moreover, the 8-speed automatic transmission features closely spaced ratios, especially in the lower gears, so a slight press of the accelerator results in rapid acceleration and immediate upshifts in quick succession, quickly pushing the speedometer to astonishing speeds.

Thanks to this 8-speed automatic transmission, engine revolutions are kept low during cruising, with the engine running at only around 1,350 rpm at 100 km/h. Naturally, the cabin's quietness is further enhanced. In fact, during low-load conditions, the engine deactivates cylinders and operates in V4 mode. The vibration reduction provided by the switchable engine mounts also contributes to a comfortable cabin environment during cruising.

Indeed, the transition between V8 and V4, or vice versa, goes unnoticed. The only perceptible difference is in the throttle response when accelerating from a constant speed, which might feel slightly less immediate than the W12. If this sensation is considered a luxury, then this somewhat subdued feel might be found wanting. However, on the other hand, many might appreciate its agility.

The handling also gives a sense of robustness. With a 25 kg reduction in front-end weight, it feels more agile. The satisfying precision with which it follows steering inputs perfectly matches the engine's character.

The Return of the Red Label

With significantly improved efficiency and a changed driving impression, the GT V8 also features visual distinctions from the W12 model. The radiator grille is a dark mesh type, framed by a metal surround. The bumper also has a sharper, more sporty shape. What stands out in the rear view are the exhaust pipes shaped like a sideways figure eight.

Furthermore, the winged "B" badges on the front and rear have a red base. For enthusiasts, this signifies the return of the Red Label.

The price for this Continental GT V8 is 21,666,000 yen. The GTC V8 is priced at 23,800,000 yen, both lower than the W12 models. The Continental GT, which made its debut with the previous generation in 2003 at a shocking price of 19,900,000 yen, has since risen to 24,150,000 yen. The introduction of a more affordable option will undoubtedly appeal to new owners and, more importantly, will strongly attract previous owners who have been hesitant to upgrade.

Incidentally, the W12 model will continue to be part of the lineup. Naturally. While some desire the V8, many owners choose the Continental GT precisely because of its 12-cylinder engine. Their expectations cannot be disappointed. However, it's not to say the W12 will remain unchanged; updates are being considered.

Due to a global increase in sales, the number of units allocated for this year's introduction appears to be quite limited. However, the arrival of the Continental GT V8 is undoubtedly set to be a powerful catalyst for boosting Bentley's momentum here in Japan. The car is expected to land in early summer, if all goes according to plan.
