Test Drive the Second-Generation BMW X6

The BMW X6, which created a trend in the automotive industry with its concept of a stylish SUV as aggressive as a sports car, has undergone a full model change to its second generation. How has this SUV, which blends seamlessly into urban environments, evolved? Fumio Ogawa takes it for a spin.

The Second Generation Inherits the Formula for Success

The new BMW "X6," for which BMW Group Japan began deliveries in Japan from December 2014, is a stylish SUV that BMW calls a SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), a concept inherited from its predecessor.X6Its aggressive exterior, reminiscent of a sports car, is a striking feature.predecessorThe first generation X6, released in 2008, sold over 250,000 units worldwide. The second generation, which underwent a full model change in autumn 2014, retains the coupe-like style with a compact cabin and the drivetrain combining a powerful engine with a four-wheel-drive system.

Two models will be introduced in Japan, differentiated by their engines: the X6 xDrive35i with a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine (306 ps, 400 Nm) and the X6 xDrive50i with a 4.4-liter V8 engine (450 ps, 650 Nm).

Both models are available with an optional "Design Pure Experience" package that offers special interior and exterior finishes. BMW Group Japan states this is a response to market demand for more exclusive models, as the previous generation was only available in a standard configuration. Additionally, an M Sport specification, featuring a slightly firmer suspension for sportier handling, is also offered.

All models are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive, an intelligent all-wheel-drive system that optimizes torque distribution between the front and rear wheels through electronic control of the center differential.

Furthermore, the M Sport model comes standard with "Dynamic Performance Control," which controls the drive force between the left and right rear wheels during cornering, and "Adaptive M Suspension," which electronically controls damping.

A Well-Crafted Style That Appears Compact

In Japan, the X6 xDrive50i with the V8 engine was launched first, with deliveries of the inline 6-cylinder X6 35i beginning in February 2015. The model tested here is the former, equipped with the powerful and torquey engine.

Although the vehicle's dimensions are not small at 4,925mm in length, 1,990mm in width, and 1,700mm in height, the actual car appears considerably more compact due to its sculpted body and the design of the relatively small cabin. A well-executed car design often appears smaller, a principle that the second-generation X6 exemplifies.

The surfaces are meticulously crafted, and when light hits them, the body's contours are accentuated, making it exceptionally appealing to car enthusiasts. While the iconic kidney grille and chrome accents emphasize a metallic texture, organic curves are created in areas like the fender flares. The skillful combination of these elements imbues the car with a unique personality.

The driver's seat is immediately familiar to anyone who has driven a BMW before. The functional layout, with controls placed where they are needed, is well-balanced with the sensory appeal of materials like wood and leather. The X6, in particular, uses more luxurious materials than its smaller sibling, the X4, exuding a stronger sense of luxury.X4The impression of glamour is further enhanced when the engine is started. The engineers have likely taken great care to ensure the presence of the V8 engine is subtly yet undeniably communicated to the driver, producing a distinct, powerful beat that is particularly favored in the North American market.

A Testament to BMW's Engineering Prowess

It accelerates with surprising speed. The numbers speak for themselves: 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. BMW proudly states that while fuel efficiency has improved by approximately 20% compared to the previous generation, acceleration has improved by 0.6 seconds – a claim that is easily understandable.

With maximum torque available from 2,000 rpm, the engine delivers strong torque even below 1,000 rpm. For everyday driving, around 1,500 rpm is likely more than sufficient, demonstrating the engine's immense power.

The 8-speed automatic transmission efficiently utilizes the engine's torque. With light throttle input, it smoothly shifts to higher gears. Conversely, when the accelerator is pressed firmly, it instantly downshifts and eagerly revs the engine to higher RPMs.

Especially in Sport mode, it truly showcases BMW's reputation as an "engine company." The engine's superb revving characteristics and the continuously abundant torque are impressive, a testament to the skillful engineering that balances this large-displacement, multi-cylinder turbocharged engine.

The chassis firmly supports this power, providing a driving experience akin to maneuvering a tall, sporty sedan.

A Youthful Sports SUV

While it possesses some characteristics of a traditional SUV, the X6 is fundamentally developed for on-road performance. Consequently, its ride is firm, making it easy for drivers of the 3 Series or 5 Series to transition to this model.

The electric steering system has a slightly heavier setting, providing a pleasingly direct steering feel. Entering a corner, adjusting speed with the responsive brakes, turning the wheel, and feeling the body gently roll as you accelerate out of the curve – this entire sequence is a testament to the X6's BMW heritage.

The cabin is remarkably quiet. On city streets, one might faintly hear the tires on the road surface if listening closely, but wind noise is kept to a minimum, creating a comfortable acoustic environment. The rear seats have a unique, slightly lower seating position, possibly for enhanced occupant safety in a collision. The rear doors also have a limited opening angle, which might be challenging for elderly passengers. It's best viewed as a youthful sports SUV prioritizing the front occupants.

The comprehensive safety equipment is another highlight of the latest X6. Driving Assistant Plus, which includes Active Cruise Control for maintaining distance to the vehicle ahead, Lane Departure Warning to alert the driver of unintended lane changes, Collision Mitigation Braking, and Forward Collision Warning, is standard on all models.

Additionally, optional features include Night Vision, which uses an infrared camera to detect people and animals in the dark; Active Protection, which automatically tightens seatbelts and closes windows in the event of a potential collision; and Lane Change Warning, which alerts the driver to vehicles in blind spots.
