Audi AG unveiled the "A3 e-tron," a plug-in hybrid based on the next-generation A3, at the Shanghai Auto Show.

54km Range on Electric Power Alone


At the Geneva Motor Show in March, it featured the RS3's power unit.A study model of the next-generation A3 notchback sedanwas announced by Audi. This time, in Shanghai, they presented its plug-in hybrid specification. The body dimensions are the same as the previously revealed A3 concept: 4,440mm in length, 1,840mm in width, and 1,390mm in height, with an identical wheelbase of 2,630mm. The new A3 exudes an even greater sense of premium than before, with rear knee space reportedly at the highest level in the premium compact sedan segment. Furthermore, the 410-liter luggage space is also ample.

The powertrain consists of a 155kW (211hp) 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection inline-four TFSI engine and a 20kW (27hp) electric motor, for a system output of 175kW (238hp). Mated to a 7-speed S tronic transmission, it accelerates the 1,720kg body from a cold start to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds, reaching a top speed of 231km/h. The lithium-ion battery pack has a usable capacity of 12kWh, enabling an all-electric range of up to 54km. However, it is disappointing that the fuel economy and CO2 emissions, key environmental performance figures, have not yet been disclosed.

The suspension features MacPherson struts at the front and a four-link setup at the rear. The tires fitted, perhaps because it is a show model, are relatively fat 245/30s on both front and rear. It is also equipped with an electric parking brake, a disengageable ESP, and front disc brakes with four-piston calipers.

Interior changes include the replacement of the tachometer on the instrument panel with a power meter, fitting for a hybrid vehicle. The S tronic shift lever is absent, replaced by buttons for R, N, and D. The parking brake function is handled by a separate P button.
