New Compact SUV GLA Launched in Japan

InFrankfurt Motor Show, it made its world premiere.Mercedes-Benz's compact SUV "GLA Class"is finally launching in Japan. Following the sedan "CLA," this model, based on the "A-Class," is an anticipated new contender that Mercedes is introducing to the recently popular compact SUV market with full confidence.

The Fourth Model Based on the A-Class

Mercedes' new compact SUV, theGLA Class, has officially debuted in Japan. As the "A" in its name suggests, this model is a sister car to the A-Class, sharing its platform and powertrains. It is the fourth model following theA-Class,B-Class, andCLA Class. Incidentally, Mercedes is reportedly developing yet another new vehicle based on the A-Class.

The GLA is not only a sister car to the A-Class but also Mercedes' fifth SUV model, a fact not to be overlooked. With the GLA's arrival, Mercedes now covers almost every segment, from the C-segment to the full-size "GL-Class."

While the brand might be primarily associated with premium sedans like theS-Class, its SUV lineup is exceptionally robust. Coupled with the image of the authentic "King of Off-Roaders," theG-Class, they have completed a formidable and competitive SUV lineup, leaving rival brands with little peace of mind.

At the launch event, Kintaro Ueno, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Japan, made a stylish entrance driving an "GLA" in Orient Brown. He even appeared on stage accompanied by Nintendo's game character, Super Mario.

While the reason for Mario's appearance will become clear later, President Ueno expressed high expectations for the GLA's launch, stating, "With the release of the 'GLA,' the latest model from Mercedes-Benz, a brand with 35 years of history in SUV manufacturing, Mercedes has become a premium brand boasting the most diverse SUV lineup." Following the recently announced six-wheel-drive Mercedes-BenzG 63 AMG 6x6, his speech conveyed a strong commitment to confidently introducing the GLA to the Japanese market as part of Mercedes' SUV lineup.

Diverse Lineup The "GLA's" stylish form can be described as an urban SUV, positioning it for direct competition with models like theBMW X1andAudi Q3. While one might assume it's simply an "A-Class" with SUV styling cues, only shared parts like the door handles and mirrors are common. Upon closer inspection, the exterior reveals unique GLA design elements such as the power domes on the hood, underguards, extended rear overhangs, and standard roof rails, all contributing to a more robust appearance. The adoption of 18-inch or larger wheels further enhances its SUV presence and rugged image.

The adoption of 18-inch or larger wheels further enhances its SUV presence and rugged image.

The Japanese specification GLA, specifically the "GLA 250 4MATIC" which is available first, measures 4,430mm in length, 1,805mm in width, and 1,505mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700mm, identical to the A-Class. The increased length is due to the extended rear overhang. Its height is designed to comply with Japanese tower parking regulations, reflecting consideration for everyday usability. This dimension is likely to appeal to customers who may have previously forgone an SUV due to height restrictions.

The initial lineup includes three models: the "GLA 180" with a 1.6-liter inline-4 turbo engine producing 90kW (122ps) and front-wheel drive; the "GLA 250 4MATIC" with a 2-liter inline-4 turbo engine producing 155kW (211ps) and all-wheel drive; and the "GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC" with a 2-liter inline-4 turbo engine producing 265kW (360ps).

All models feature the 7-speed dual-clutch "7G-DCT" transmission. The "GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC" is further equipped with an AMG-tuned "7G-DCT" that performs electronic blipping during downshifts, and the "AMG Performance Exhaust System."

Additionally, for the "GLA 180" and "GLA 250 4MATIC," there are two grades available besides the base model: the "Off-Road" grade, which features an "Off-Road Comfort Suspension" that raises the ground clearance to approximately 180mm for improved off-road performance and comfort, and the "Sport" grade, which adopts AMG styling and lowers the vehicle by 10mm compared to the standard model.

In essence, the GLA lineup consists of three engine and drivetrain variants, with two of these (excluding the AMG) offering three distinct grades, creating a rich and varied configuration.

Deliveries for the "GLA 250 4MATIC" and "GLA 250 4MATIC Sport" begin today. However, deliveries for the "GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC," all grades of the "GLA 180," and the "GLA 250 4MATIC Off-Road" are scheduled for autumn 2014 or later.

Possesses Ample SUV Functionality

For the Japanese launch, special edition models "GLA 250 4MATIC Edition 1" and "GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC Edition 1" have been introduced, featuring combination leather seats, aluminum-style interior panels, and exclusive emblems. A total of 300 units of the "GLA 250 4MATIC Edition 1" and 600 units of the "GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC Edition 1" are planned for sale.

Both models boast sporty exteriors and specially designed seats. The "GLA 250 4MATIC Edition 1" is equipped with 19-inch AMG 5-spoke wheels in black paint, while the "GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC Edition 1" features 20-inch AMG 10-spoke wheels in matte black paint.

The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system used in the GLA, which is positioned as an SUV, is similar to that found in the A-Class and CLA. It allows for variable torque distribution between the front and rear axles, ranging from 100:0 to 50:50, depending on driving conditions and road surface. While it distributes power to the rear wheels as needed during cornering on general roads with good grip, it primarily operates in front-wheel-drive mode for improved fuel efficiency.

The "GLA 250 4MATIC," considered a core model, has a minimum ground clearance of 150mm. While this may seem modest compared to hardcore SUVs, it's unlikely anyone intends to undertake serious off-roading with this vehicle. For light use on snowy roads or rough terrain, it offers a distinct advantage over sedans and coupes.

For those considering off-road capabilities, the "GLA 250 4MATIC Off-Road" option will be available, albeit with a slight delay.
These "4MATIC" models are equipped with "DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation)" for automatic speed control on steep descents, and a practical yet playful "Off-Road Screen" that displays steering angle, gradient, vehicle inclination, and compass direction. Although positioned as a city-oriented vehicle, it clearly incorporates the fundamental aspects of an SUV.

Interior Shared with the A-Class

The interior design is largely consistent with that of the A-Class.

Although the GLA has a higher ride height and an extended rear compared to the A-Class, it comes standard with a rearview camera and parking assist. The Active Parking Assist also aids the driver in smooth parallel parking maneuvers. Naturally, the state-of-the-art Radar Safety Package is available (standard on the "GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC," optional on others).

The luggage compartment features the "EASY-PACK" automatic tailgate for convenient opening and closing. Despite its compact dimensions, the luggage capacity is 421 liters in its standard configuration. This can be expanded to a maximum of 1,235 liters by folding down the rear seats. The practical and user-friendly cargo space is another appealing aspect of the GLA.

Practicality and comfort are further enhanced with standard features such as heated front seats and privacy glass. The body color lineup includes the new signature "Orient Brown," along with "Calcite White" and "Jupiter Red," totaling nine colors. The "GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC" also offers "designo Magno Mountain Grey" as an exclusive color.

Collaboration with Super Mario

To commemorate the launch of the "GLA," Mercedes-Benz Japan will air a collaborative TV commercial with Nintendo's "Super Mario Bros." starting May 30th. Titled "GO! GLA," the commercial features a comical and unique concept where the actual car emerges from the Super Mario Bros. game screen. This collaboration is also the reason for Mario's appearance at the beginning.

Furthermore, the "GLA" kart will appear in Nintendo's "Mario Kart 8," released today for "Wii U." This downloadable content will be available for free soon, and a "Mario Kart" tournament using the "GLA" kart is planned for this autumn. For a limited time until June 8th, visitors can experience the game firsthand at the second-floor lounge of "Mercedes me" in Roppongi. Those interested are encouraged to visit.

Finally, the pricing: the "GLA 180" is priced at 3.44 million yen, the "GLA 180 Sport" and "GLA 180 Off-Road" at 3.99 million yen, the "GLA 250 4MATIC" at 4.59 million yen, the "GLA 250 4MATIC Sport" and "GLA 250 4MATIC Off-Road" at 4.99 million yen, and the "GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC" at 7.032 million yen. The launch editions, "GLA 250 4MATIC Edition 1" and "GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC Edition 1," are priced at 5.49 million yen and 8.10 million yen, respectively.
