AudiA new premium compact sports hatchback, achieving a high level of both performance and environmental compatibility, has arrived as the new flagship model of the "Audi A3 Sportback."
High Performance and Environmental Compatibility Achieved at a High Level
On February 2nd, Audi announced the new "Audi S3 Sportback." The "S3 Sportback," now the new flagship model in the premium compact hatchback "A3 Sportback" lineup, is drawing attention for its significantly upgraded driving performance compared to the "A3 Sportback."
The power unit is a specially reinforced and improved 2.0-liter TFSI engine. It delivers a maximum output of 256 ps at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 330 Nm (33.7 kgm) at 2,400-5,200 rpm, driving all four wheels via the quattro system. This represents an 18% increase in output and a 28% increase in torque compared to the "A3 Sportback 2.0 TFSI quattro."
Furthermore, a 6-speed S tronic (dual-clutch transmission) is employed. Alongside rapid and smooth gear changes, it also contributes to improved fuel efficiency. Of course, enhancements extend beyond performance to the design, with a distinctive sporty flair characteristic of the S series. The exterior features a single-frame grille with vertical chrome double lines, large intake grilles with round fog lamps, and aluminum-look door mirrors, adding an aggressive nuance.
The interior is equipped with exclusive sports seats made of Alcantara and genuine leather, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. The luggage space offers a capacity of 302 liters, the same as the A3 Sportback. Audi describes the new S3 Sportback as a "premium compact sports hatchback that achieves a high level of both performance and environmental compatibility." Priced at 5.15 million yen, 720,000 yen higher than the A3 Sportback 2.0-liter TFSI quattro, it is available only with right-hand drive in Japan.

BRAND HISTORY
Audi's emblem is the "Four Rings." As you may know, each ring represents one of the automotive manufacturers: Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer. All were based in Saxony and were leading brands in the German automotive industry at the beginning of the 20th century. However, the four companies, hit hard by the Great Depression following World War I, formed Auto Union in 1932 to survive. DKW specialized in motorcycles and small cars, Wanderer in mid-sized cars, Audi in premium mid-sized cars, and Horch in luxury cars.
However, after World War II, Saxony in East Germany fell under Soviet occupation, and Auto Union ceased to exist. Anticipating this, the new Auto Union was established in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, in West Germany. Unlike BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Auto Union faced a difficult start without existing factories, but gradually gained strength through the production of vehicles like the DKW delivery van.
Auto Union, acquired by Volkswagen at the end of 1964, soon introduced new models bearing the Audi name. In 1969, it merged with NSU (known for its development of the Wankel engine), based in Neckarsulm, becoming Audi NSU Auto Union. From 1985 onwards, it has continued as Audi to the present day. Technologies such as quattro, dynamic performance backed by motorsport activities, elegant design, and high-quality finishes are driving Audi's popularity.
