Mercedes-Benz is expanding its lineup of "4MATIC" all-wheel-drive models. Recently,CLS 63 AMGand the newE 63 AMGwere announced, as well as the preview of theCLA-ClassandA 45 AMGwhich will feature Mercedes-Benz's first FF-based "4MATIC" system. At the pinnacle of this "4MATIC" lineup, representing the most heavy-duty system, is the one found in the flagship SUV, the "GL-Class." Yasuhiko Kawamura discusses the new model, which debuted at theNew York International Auto Show 2012and explains its "4MATIC" system.GL-Classand its "4MATIC" system.

The "S-Class" of SUVs
Mercedes-Benz is clearly moving to expand its lineup of "4MATIC" all-wheel-drive models. It has introduced new 4WD models based on an FF layout, which did not exist before. With these additions, the company plans to increase its current 51 4WD model variations to nearly 60 in the near future.
The new FF-based "4MATIC" system, which utilizes an electronically controlled wet multi-plate clutch for "torque-on-demand" power distribution, is positioned to be sportier than two-wheel-drive models. This is already a decided factor. The symbolic model embodying this is expected to be the "CLA 45 AMG," featuring a compact four-door coupe body and a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing over 400 Nm of maximum torque.
Meanwhile, at the top of the existing "4MATIC" series, based on an FR layout, is the new "GL-Class," which debuted last spring and boldly proclaims itself as the "S-Class of SUVs."
With a length exceeding 5.1 meters and a width approaching 2 meters, one might question if such a massive vehicle is truly suited for Japan, where road infrastructure isn't always ideal. The answer, naturally, would be "no." However, the sheer presence that this vehicle commands, due to its scale that could be considered "unconventional" in Japan, is undeniably overwhelming.
While some contemporary SUVs feature crossover proportions, aiming for a sleek "tall four-door coupe" aesthetic, this model, like its predecessor, exudes the aura of a true, orthodox SUV. The roofline, extending almost to the rear of the body with its predominantly horizontal line, strongly suggests a spacious interior.
The GL-Class, a seven-seater with three rows of seats, earns its "S-Class of SUVs" moniker partly due to this exceptional spaciousness. Its deliberately "unpretentious design" is also a key characteristic of the new GL.

The Most Heavy-Duty 4MATIC
M-ClassandR-ClassIt's a full-time system with a 50:50 torque split between the front and rear axles. The rear and center differentials are equipped with locking mechanisms, and the 7-speed automatic transmission includes a low-range gear, making it a truly capable system.
Furthermore, with features like "Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR)" for controlling speed on steep descents and "Off-Road ABS" that shortens braking distances by utilizing wheel slip, the system employed in this model can be described as the most heavy-duty among the various "4MATIC" variations.
Interestingly, in addition to these standard specifications, there's an optional "On & Offroad Package" that further enhances off-road capability. Similar to Land Rover's "Terrain Response," this optional equipment includes six driving modes that can be selected with a single touch to adapt electronic control systems to changing road conditions, as well as an active stabilizer system that improves handling on slippery surfaces. With this package, the GL-Class transforms into a tough off-roader, defying its appearance.
For instance, its ground clearance of up to 285mm and wading depth of 600mm hint at its performance as a genuine off-roader. It's distinct from those who merely project toughness through their looks.

Exceptional Sense of Security
We test-drove the new GL-Class in and around Innsbruck, Austria, a region renowned for winter sports and the site of two previous Winter Olympic Games.
Although the winter season had already begun, the roads were mostly dry during the test. However, as we drove towards the mountains, meltwater from the snow flowed onto the roadside, and the temperature was low enough for it to freeze. Therefore, the sense of security provided by the 4WD system was undoubtedly extremely high.
The "GL500," which will be designated as "550" in Japan, as was the previous model, is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 engine.
With a maximum output of 435ps, its torque of 700Nm can only be described as "immense."
Furthermore, a key characteristic is that this power is delivered from a remarkably low engine speed of just 1,800 rpm, akin to a diesel engine.
The vehicle's weight, measured according to European standards (90% fuel load, 68kg driver, 7kg luggage), is 2,445 kg. However, the power unit, combining the aforementioned engine with a 7-speed automatic transmission, effortlessly handles this weight, achieving 0-100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds.
Indeed, the acceleration feels as potent as the figures suggest, with absolutely no sense of sluggishness. Moreover, the remarkable quietness maintained even during such acceleration leads most people to agree with the phrase "S-Class of SUVs" the moment they press the accelerator.
Despite being equipped with winter tires, we were able to confidently navigate the massive vehicle through varying conditions, from highways in the city to mountain winding roads at altitudes of up to 2,000 meters, sometimes on slippery surfaces. The stable traction and precise handling provided by the 4WD system undoubtedly played a significant role, both practically and psychologically.
When thinking of Mercedes-Benz's ultimate off-roaders, many would likely mention theG-ClassIts history, spanning over 30 years, undoubtedly contributes to its formidable brand power, and there's no disputing that.
However, while the "G-Class" is now primarily valued for its "classic" appeal, the "GL-Class" offers far more modern and practical potential as a large off-roader. For Mercedes-Benz, a manufacturer with a full lineup, the GL-Class truly embodies the character of the "S-Class of SUVs."
